Variations in downslope activity and bottom current dynamics in a land‐detached submarine channel system since the Last Glacial Maximum

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Gollum Channel System is a land‐detached large‐scale canyon‐channel system situated offshore southwest Ireland on the Northeast Atlantic margin. The system has been considered inactive with downslope gravity flows since the last glacial period, but geophysical data in some of its branches do suggest Holocene activity.

Sediment transport and depositional hydrodynamics on the eastern Korean continental margin revealed by surface sediment granulometry

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Terrigenous sediments are transported from coastal areas and shelves to deeper continental margins by multiple processes. Understanding these processes is critical for evaluating the ecological impacts of fine‐grained sediment deposition and predicting future changes in sediment dispersal under rapid climate change.

Living in the Mycelial World

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract This manuscript documents a systematic ethnomycological analysis of ethnographic archives. Focusing on texts describing human–fungi interactions, I conduct a global, cross‐cultural review of mushroom use, covering 193 societies worldwide. The study reveals diverse mushroom‐related cultural practices, emphasizing the significance of fungi ...

Valproic acid for treatment of traumatic brain injury: Study protocol for the VIBRANT prospective randomized trial

open access: yesTransfusion, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Traumatic brain injury (TBI) carries significant mortality and morbidity in civilian and military populations. Current treatment guidelines for TBI are primarily supportive, and no pharmacological agent exists to attenuate the progression of brain injury.

Hypoxic‐hypocapnic red blood cells in PAGGSM additive solution before and after gamma irradiation show improved metabolism

open access: yesVox Sanguinis, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Objectives Hypoxic/hypocapnic (HH) treatment and storage conditions have been shown to reduce oxidative stress and improve red blood cell (RBC) quality. This study aimed to validate a good manufacturing practice HH RBC product for obtaining the licence for routine use in patients, by comparison with normoxic RBCs both without ...

Complex Resonant Ice Shelf Vibrations

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 2021
In this interesting paper the authors study the problem of ice shelf vibrations forced by incident waves from the open ocean. The shelf is modeled as a thin elastic plate, with density \(\rho_i = 917 \mathrm{kg\, m}^{-3}\) and flexural rigidity \(F (x) = E D^3/12 (1-\nu^2)\), where \(E = 11\, \mathrm{GPa}\) is Young's modulus and \(\nu = 0.3\) is ...

Ice shelf balances

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1982
Abstract A two-dimensional analysis which neglects profile variation in a lateral direction is presented for a floating viscous ice shelf. It applies to plane flow and to unconfined flow which is within short distances of the symmetry line. It is shown that surface variation can, in time, make a significant contribution to the balance, and yet be too

Antarctic Ice Shelf Aquifers:Characteristics and Potential Contributions to Ice Shelf Loss

2022
<p>Water-saturated firn layers, or firn aquifers, have recently been identified from satellite microwave image time-series data in some western Antarctic Peninsula ice shelves. Subsequent field work on the Wilkins Ice Shelf (this work) and Müller Ice Shelf (MacDonell et al., 2021) has proven the existence of these perennial ...

The Ross Ice Shelf Project

Science, 1979
A hole was drilled through the Ross Ice Shelf 450 kilometers from the barrier. Scientific sampling through this hole revealed a sparse population of crustaceans, fish, and microbial biomass. The seabed consists of mid-Miocene glaciomarine mud. Geothermal heat flow is average.
