Characteristics of ice slurry containing antifreeze protein for ice storage applications
Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer, 1997For the development of flowable ice for storage and long distance transportation purposes, that is resistant to recrystallization and contains defined crystal structures, the characteristics of an ice slurry generated from an antifreeze protein solution have been examined. Three methods for obtaining the antifreeze protein are described.

Ice Slurry Thermal Energy Storage System
10th AIAA/ASME Joint Thermophysics and Heat Transfer Conference, 2010A laboratory scale ice slurry thermal energy storage (TES) system for high power device cooling is demonstrated. The TES rate is greater than 60 kW in a 30 s discharge period. The primary water flow as the heat source with a designed flow rate of 1.44 kg/s (or greater) and a temperature of 20 to 30°C is cooled down to a desired temperature by the TES ...

Continuous ice slurry formation using a functional fluid for ice storage
International Journal of Refrigeration, 2004Abstract A functional fluid composed of an oil–water mixture with an additive is transformed into an ice slurry by cooling while stirring. This paper describes a new continuous ice slurry formation method. Experiments were carried out by varying conditions such as the supply time of functional fluid, the stirrer torque, brine temperature and degree ...

Ice slurry based thermal storage in multifunctional buildings
Heat and Mass Transfer, 2001Ice slurry based thermal storage plays an important role in reshaping patterns of electricity use for space cooling and heating. It offers inherent advantages in energy efficiency, operating savings, load follow-up and flexible installation over conventional thermal storage technologies.

PRESSURE DROP IN ICE-WATER SLURRIES FOR THERMAL STORAGE APPLICATION
Experimental Heat Transfer, 1987Pressure drop and flow characteristics were studied for ice-water slurries in 7.6 in-long horizontal pipes of diameters 0.1 m and 0.05 m. Ice fractions ranged from 0 to 16% in the experiments, and the latter represented considerable thermal storage potential. Reynolds numbers at zero ice fraction were above 105.

Time-dependent behavior of different ice slurries during storage
International Journal of Refrigeration, 2005One of the main advantages of ice slurry as secondary refrigerant is the possibility of cold storage, which enables load shifting and peak shaving. During cold storage, ice crystals are subject to mechanisms as attrition, agglomeration and Ostwald ripening causing changes in the crystal size distribution, which are of great importance for ice slurry ...

Modelling and numerical simulation of ice slurry storage tank
2007Abstract Ice slurries, composed of an aqueous solution and water ice crystals, are used in new environmentally friendly refrigeration systems in order to reduce the amount of refrigerant. The slurry storage tank is an equipment which is important to correctly design.

Numerical modeling of double-diffusive convection in ice slurry storage tank
International Journal of Refrigeration, 2010Abstract The interaction between laminar Rayleigh–Benard convection and non-isothermal melting process is studied for the case of ice slurry kept in a rectangular cavity heated from the bottom. Clear visualization of the Rayleigh–Benard convective cells and their interaction with the melting front are obtained.

Characterisation of ice slurry sedimentation applied to storage
2009La réfrigération par coulis de glace est une technologie de distribution de froid prometteuse, mais son développement est encore très lent. Pour palier cette réduction d'efficacité, il est nécessaire de coupler au système de coulis de glace un dispositif de stockage.

AbstractAntiagglomeration effects of different surfactants on ice slurry formation were examined to improve the efficiency of an ice‐water slurry system to be used for cold thermal storage. Among the chemical surfactants tested, a nonionic surfactant, poly(oxyethylene) sorbitan dioleate, was found to show a greater antiagglomeration effect on the ...
