A viscoelastic model of ice stream flow with application to stick-slip motion
Stick-slip motion such as that observed at Whillans Ice Stream, WestAntarctica, is one example of transient forcing significantly affecting longer-termice-stream dynamics.

Linear stability analysis of ice growth under supercooled water film driven by a laminar airflow [PDF]
We propose a theoretical model for ice growth under a wind-driven supercooled water film. The thickness and surface velocity of the water layer are variable by changing the air stream velocity. For a given water supply rate, linear stability analysis is carried out to study the morphological instability of the ice-water interface.

Basal melt beneath Whillans Ice Stream and Ice Streams A and C, West Antarctica [PDF]
AbstractWe have used a recently derived map of the velocity of Whillans Ice Stream and Ice Streams A and C, West Antarctica, to help estimate basal melt. Ice temperature was modeled with a simple vertical advection–diffusion equation,“tuned” to match temperature profiles.

Contrary Responses of the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio to Arctic Sea Ice Loss
The impact on the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio from Arctic sea ice loss is investigated using the Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4) model for their important roles during climate change.

Superimposition of ribbed moraines on a palaeo‐ice‐stream bed: implications for ice stream dynamics and shutdown [PDF]
AbstractThe sediments and landforms preserved on palaeo‐ice‐stream beds can provide important information about their subglacial conditions and flow mechanisms, and the processes accompanying their shutdown. In this paper, detailed observations of an intriguing subglacial landform assemblage of ribbed moraines superimposed on glacial lineations on the ...

Analytical Models of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. IV. Improved Two-stream Radiative Transfer for the Treatment of Aerosols [PDF]
We present a novel generalization of the two-stream method of radiative transfer, which allows for the accurate treatment of radiative transfer in the presence of strong infrared scattering by aerosols. We prove that this generalization involves only a simple modification of the coupling coefficients and transmission functions in the hemispheric two ...

A Catalog of Moving Group Candidates in The Solar Neighborhood [PDF]
Based on the kernel estimator and wavelet technique, we have identified 22 moving group candidates in the solar neighborhood from a sample which includes around 14,000 dwarfs and 6000 giants. Six of them were previously known as the Hercules stream, the Sirus-UMa stream, the Hyades stream, the Caster group, the Pleiades stream, and the IC 2391; five of

Evolving basal slip under glaciers and ice streams [PDF]
Many fast-flowing glaciers and ice streams move over beds consisting of reworked sediments and erosional products, commonly referred to as till. The complex interplay between ice, meltwater, and till at the subglacial bed connects several fundamental problems in glaciology including the debate about rapid mass loss from the ice sheets, the formation ...

FU Orionis outbursts, preferential recondensation of water ice, and the formation of giant planets [PDF]
Ices, including water ice, prefer to recondense onto pre-existing nuclei rather than spontaneously forming grains from a cloud of vapor. Interestingly, different potential recondensation nuclei have very different propensities to actually nucleate water ice at the temperatures associated with freeze-out in protoplanetary discs.

Rapid ice sheet retreat triggered by ice stream debuttressing: Evidence from the North Sea
Using high-resolution bathymetric and shallow seismic data from the North Sea, we have mapped hitherto unknown glacial landforms that connect and resolve longstanding gaps in the Quaternary geological history of the basin. We use these data combined with
