Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

Diverse behaviors of marine ice sheets in response to temporal variability of the atmospheric and basal conditions

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology
The observed retreat of the grounding line of the present-day ice sheets and the simulated grounding-line retreat of ice sheets under changing climate conditions are often interpreted as indications of marine ice-sheet instability (MISI), driven by a ...

Poking Pluripotency: Nanoinjection Into Human iPSCs

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoinjection into hiPSCs: silicon nanotubes effectively transfect human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) with mRNA, enabled by a delayed extracellular matrix application and enhanced surface functionalization. Nanoinjection is demonstrated with several reporter mRNA, including co‐transfection of mCherry and GFP.

Interplay of grounding-line dynamics and sub-shelf melting during retreat of the Bjørnøyrenna Ice Stream

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
The Barents Sea Ice Sheet was a marine-based ice sheet, i.e., it rested on the Barents Sea floor during the Last Glacial Maximum (21 ky BP). The Bjørnøyrenna Ice Stream was the largest ice stream draining the Barents Sea Ice Sheet and is regarded as an ...

A shallow approximation for ice streams sliding over strong beds

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
Ice streams are regions of rapid ice sheet flow characterised by a high degree of sliding over a deforming bed. The shallow shelf approximation (SSA) provides a convenient way to obtain closed-form approximations of the velocity and flux in a rapidly ...

Catch, Release, Repeat: Reversible Protein Capture in Electric Fields Using Antifouling Polymer Brushes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Capturing proteins is easy since their amphiphilic nature allows them to bind to almost any surface. Because of this, releasing them is challenging since various interactions need to be considered for this. We present a simple method to reversibly adsorb proteins on stabilized electrodes.

Understanding Operando Water Management in Hydroxide‐Exchange‐Membrane Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Effective water management is vital for high‐performance hydroxide‐exchange‐membrane fuel cells. Using a custom water‐flux station, this study quantifies how membrane thickness, microporous layers, and operating conditions dictate internal water transport.

Effect of Surface‐Lubricant Compatibility on Bubble Formation in Lubricant‐Infused Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Lubricant‐infused surfaces reduce drag partly through bubbles that form when lubricant depletes. Using laser‐textured steel infused with silicone oil, we show that microbubble nucleation occurs even on surfaces fully wetted by the lubricant, regardless of chemistry.

Basal topographic controls on the stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet: lessons from Foundation Ice Stream

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2017
Using observations of basal topography, ice thickness and modern accumulation rates, we use theory and a dynamic flowline model to examine the sensitivity of Antarctica's Foundation Ice Stream to changes in sea level, accumulation and buttressing at the ...
