The role of GPR techniques in determining ice cave properties: Peña Castil ice cave, Picos de Europa [PDF]
Producción CientíficaThe structure and ice content of ice caves are poorly understood. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) can provide useful insights but has only rarely been applied to ice caves.

Estimating Arctic sea ice thickness and volume using CryoSat-2 radar altimeter data
Arctic sea ice is a major element of the Earth’s climate system. It acts to regulate regional heat and freshwater budgets and subsequent atmospheric and oceanic circulation across the Arctic and at lower latitudes.

Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Kennicott Glacier, Alaska: Ice Thickness Measurements using Ground Penetrating Radar (and Inexperienced Skiiers) [PDF]
What happens when you send a professor, a mentor, and seven inexperienced undergraduates into the field? Dr. Erin Pettit and UAF graduate student Christina Carr led myself and six other undergraduates onto Kennicott Glacier in hopes of teaching us about

Multidecadal observations of sea ice thickness, in addition to those available for extent, are key to understanding long ‐ term variations and trends in the amount of Arctic sea ice. The European Space Agency's Envisat (2002 – 2010) and CryoSat ‐ 2 (2010

TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

The role of subtemperate slip in thermally driven ice stream margin migration [PDF]
The amount of ice discharged by an ice stream depends on its width, and the widths of unconfined ice streams such as the Siple Coast ice streams in West Antarctica have been observed to evolve on decadal to centennial timescales.

Grease-ice thickness parameterization [PDF]
AbstractGrease ice is a mixture of sea water and frazil ice crystals forming in Arctic and Antarctic waters. the initial grease-ice cover, or the grease ice forming during winter in leads and polynyas, may therefore have mixed properties of water and ice.

Calibrated Ice Thickness Estimate for All Glaciers in Austria
Knowledge on ice thickness distribution and total ice volume is a prerequisite for computing future glacier change for both glaciological and hydrological applications. Various ice thickness estimation methods have been developed but regional differences
