Influences of gas bubble and ice density on ice thickness measurement by GPR

Applied Geophysics, 2010
Lake ice thickness changes with regional hydrometeorology and is closely associated with global climate change. We tested the detection of ice thickness using ground penetrating radar (GPR) in the Hongqipao reservoir. Ice crystals, gas bubbles, ice density and ice thickness were also determined by concurrently drilling for validation.

Ice Thickness Measurements on the Southern Patagonia Icefield

2002
The first detailed ice thickness measurements in the accumulation area of the Southern Patagonia Icefield have been obtained with a radio-echo sounding system, revealing a complex subglacial topography and internal reflection pattern.

Airborne Measurement of Snow Thickness over Sea Ice

IGARSS 2008 - 2008 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2008
Snow cover on sea ice plays an important role in the climate of the polar regions. Snow on the sea ice reduces the heat exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere by its high albedo and low thermal conductivity. The lower the albedo, the less solar energy is reflected back into the atmosphere. Data on the extent and thickness of snow cover is needed

A wideband radar depth sounder for measuring the thickness of glacial ice

IEEE International IEEE International IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2004. IGARSS '04. Proceedings. 2004, 2004
We developed a wideband coherent radar depth sounder (WCORDS) system developed to measure glacial ice thickness and map internal layers with high resolution. The radar operates over a frequency range of 50-200 MHz, providing a resolution of about 1 m in ice.

Ultrawideband Radar Measurements of Thickness of Snow Over Sea Ice

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2007
An accurate knowledge of snow thickness and its variability over sea ice is crucial in determining the overall polar heat and freshwater budget, which influences the global climate. Recently, algorithms have been developed to extract snow thicknesses from satellite passive microwave data.

Ice Thickness Distribution — Measurement and Theory

1986
In considering the historical literature relevant to the subject of ice thickness distribution, I was struck by the paper by Wittmann and Schule (1966) at the Lake Arrowhead symposium on the Arctic heat budget. They presented a synthesis of visual observations from aircraft showing ice concentration, lead spacings, percent coverage of several ice types,

High-resolution penetrating radar for ice thickness measurement

2012 14th International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), 2012
We have developed a high-resolution penetrating radar to measure glacial ice thickness. With an operating frequency band of 100–150 MHz, this radar can provide a range resolution of less than 2 m in ice. The radar is designed to measure ice sheet thickness up to 3000 m.

Measurement of Sea Ice Thickness With Airborne Electromagnetic Equipment

Offshore Technology Conference, 1989
ABSTRACT The topography along the ice water interface can be recovered from airborne electromagnetic data With an Iterative inversion scheme. This method is based on a new fast algorithm for solving the forward problem, which can be used to evaluate electromagnetic scattering by an irregular but highly conductive ...

Measurement of sea ice thickness with airborne electromagnetic system

54th EAEG Meeting, 1992
For winter navigation in Finland it is economically important to know the ice conditions on the sea. First tests have been done with the fixed wing airborne electromagnetic system of Geological Survey of Finland to check its capacity to measure ice thickness quickly and economically.

Measurement of the thickness of ice by means of a frequency-modulated radiometer

Measurement Techniques, 2008
The operating principle of an ice thickness radiometer is considered, drawbacks of existing devices are noted, and an algorithm for processing the signals from a frequency-modulated distance finder reflected from the upper and lower surface of the ice is proposed. The algorithm was developed using a method of high spectral resolution.
