Stratigraphic evidence for modern‐like glacier extents in south‐central Alaska within the last glacial period (MIS 3)

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 55, Issue 2, Page 476-502, April 2026.
The last (Wisconsinan) glacial period was punctuated in North America by two glacial maxima, known as the Early and Late Wisconsinan glaciations. In Alaska, these maxima and their subsequent retreats have been the object of dating efforts to reconstruct local climatic events and compare them to global trends.

Classification of calving fronts around Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Iceberg calving is the largest loss term in Antarctic mass balance. The iceberg areas vary from a few square meters (growler) to several hundred square kilometres (huge tabular icebergs or ice islands) and their shape (blocky, domed or tabular) depends ...

The 'footloose' mechanism: iceberg decay from hydrostatic stresses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We study a mechanism of iceberg breakup that may act together with the recognized melt and wave-induced decay processes. Our proposal is based on observations from a recent field experiment on a large ice island in Baffin Bay, East Canada.

Middle to Late Pleistocene landscape evolution and glacial dynamics in the Eastern Alps: the Gröbminger Mitterberg record, Austria

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 55, Issue 2, Page 517-541, April 2026.
Glacial erosion during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) has removed much evidence of earlier glaciations and interglacials in the European Alps. At Gröbminger Mitterberg (GM), beneath a blanket of LGM till, a distinctive sediment archive preserves deposits predating the LGM.

Iceberg jam floods in Icelandic proglacial rivers: testing the self-organized criticality hypothesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper, we describe a fluvial marginal process associated with the formation of iceberg jams in Icelandic proglacial lakes. The floods triggered by the release of these iceberg jams have implications for the geomorphic evolution of the proglacial ...

Dynamic Lake Ice Conditions Shape Caribou Water‐Crossing Behavior in the Arctic

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 4, April 2026.
Seasonally dynamic ice conditions regulate migratory connectivity in Arctic caribou. In spring, intermediate ice conditions permit direct lake crossings until a behavioral threshold in surface albedo is reached (APR ≈0.56), whereas in fall, ice‐free conditions act as barriers and promote circumnavigations around lakes.

Disentangling the oceanic drivers behind the post-2000 retreat of Sermeq Kujalleq, Greenland (Jakobshavn Isbræ) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Ocean temperatures have warmed in the fjords surrounding the Greenland Ice Sheet, causing increased melt along their ice fronts and rapid glacier retreat and contributing to rising global sea levels.

Possible Mechanisms for Glacial Earthquakes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The large glacial earthquakes reported on by Ekström et al. (2003, 2006) and Tsai and Ekström (2007) have previously been evaluated in terms of their seismic characteristics.

Running economy and lower‐limb anthropometry in adult male Kenyan and Danish middle‐ and long‐distance runners and in untrained adolescents

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 4, Page 1919-1932, 1 April 2026.
Abstract Kenyan athletes have dominated competitive middle‐ and long‐distance running for more than half a century, a phenomenon suggested to be attributable, at least in part, to superior running economy. Given that lower‐leg anthropometry is an important determinant of running economy, a key contributor to the athletic performance of Kenyan runners ...

Brief communication: Impacts of a developing polynya off Commonwealth Bay, East Antarctica, triggered by grounding of iceberg B09B [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The dramatic calving of the Mertz Glacier tongue in 2010, precipitated by the movement of iceberg B09B, reshaped the oceanographic regime across the Mertz Polynya and Commonwealth Bay, regions where high-salinity shelf water (HSSW) - the precursor to ...
