The performance of marine radar for ice detection is investigated using iceberg observational data collected during three years of offshore drilling in the Labrador Sea region. One thousand "first sightings" of icebergs during drilling operations revealed a maximum range of detection of 87km, with the median value being 27.8km.

Detection of Icebergs from SAR imagery
2019 Fifth International Conference on Image Information Processing (ICIIP), 2019The objective of this paper is to put forward a novel approach to detect the presence of icebergs from Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery obtained from Sentinel-l radar imagery. Strategies like Image Augmentation are used to increase the sample size of the training data.

Real-time radar detection of iceberg shadows
IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 1990The Hough transform is used to estimate the radial direction of shadows cast by icebergs in surface-based marine radar returns using a Warp systolic computer. Automatically locating these shadows leads directly to automatically locating the icebergs casting the shadows.
