Meltwater as a Local Source of Ice Nucleating Particles in the Central Arctic Summer

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Identifying sources of ice nucleating particles (INPs) in the central Arctic is important for understanding controls on the phase of Arctic mixed‐phase clouds (AMPCs). We show meltwater samples collected from the Arctic pack ice in July 2020 contain biological INPs active at relatively warm temperatures (T ≥ −10°C).

UUV-Assisted Icebreaking Application in Polar Environments Using GA-SPSO

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
This paper addresses the challenges faced by icebreakers in polar environments, particularly the difficulty in sensing underwater ice formations when navigating through thick ice layers, which often results in suboptimal icebreaking effectiveness.

Engaging With Multi‐Level Climate Governance: A Place‐Based Exploration of Public Perceptions of a Local Climate Change Strategy

open access: yesGeo: Geography and Environment, Volume 13, Issue 1, January‐June 2026.
Short Abstract Responsibilities for addressing climate change have been distributed across scales of governance, resulting in an increasing number of climate strategies being developed, each grounded within specific sub‐national scales. Drawing upon a relational place‐based framing, we identify tensions within the development and implementation of ...

Prediction of ship resistance in level ice based on empirical approach

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2017
A semi-empirical model to predict ship resistance in level ice based on Lindqvist's model is presented. This model assumes that contact between the ship and the ice is a case of symmetrical collision, and two contact cases are considered.

Monitoring Pacific walrus coastal haulouts by satellite to estimate herd abundance and distribution

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue 4, December 2025.
We monitored Pacific walrus haulouts with drone and satellite imagery to derive new methods for estimating minimum population size. The largest herd observed during an 8‐year study period was on the coast of northeastern Russia at Cape Serdtse‐Kamen in autumn 2022 where the aggregation spanned over an area of 184,094 m2 with a mean density (and 90 ...
