Design and Verification of a Modified Ichip to Incorporate Coculturing of Soil Microbes; How the political economy hinders antibiotic discovery and how that can be changed

2022
The overwhelming majority microbial species don’t grow on normal laboratory media, which is necessary in order to study their biology. There are many different strategies that aim to grow these “unculturable” microbes, with one such strategy being the ichip.

Design and Verification of a Modified Ichip to Incorporate Coculturing of Soil Microbes; Examining the Process of Research to Grow Unculturable Microbes using Actor Network Theory

2022
There is a rise in antibiotic-resistance infections leading to poor efficacy of current treatments with antibiotics. Bacterial infections that may have been easily treated with antibiotics are now unable to be treated. This crisis has developed due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in addition to less and less new drug development.

In Situ Isolation and Culturing of Recalcitrant Soil Bacteria using an Isolation Chip (iChip).

Journal of visualized experiments : JoVE
Ecosystems harbor millions of environmental microbes, some of them capable of producing biotechnologically relevant products such as enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, organic acids, anti-parasitic agents, and antimicrobial agents. Most of these environmental bacteria are deemed "unculturable" as the laboratory culturing methods fail to meet their ...
