Application of the Gini Index on the Evaluation of the Environmental Heterogeneity and Habitat Suitability Index for Larval Gobies

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
Spatial environmental heterogeneity in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) is always mentioned but rarely quantified and included in the evaluation process. This study introduced the habitat suitability index evaluation model based on the Gini index (HSIgini)

On the phenology of North Sea ichthyoplankton [PDF]

open access: yesICES Journal of Marine Science, 2005
Abstract The timing of fish larvae abundance was investigated at Helgoland Roads in the southern North Sea for the years 1990, 1993–1996, 1998, and 1999. From the 44 species identified, 27 were sufficiently abundant in more than 3 years and had well defined seasonal changes to calculate their phenology.

Deciphering the complex life cycle and partial migration of an ecological engineer and critical Neotropical fishery species, Prochilodus costatus

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding complex migration patterns, including drivers of partial migration and habitat use, is challenging but essential for conservation, as it determines a species' adaptative capacity in the face of environmental change and anthropogenic threats.

The Diversity of Fish Larvae in the Bons Sinais Estuary (Mozambique) and Its Role as a Nursery to Marine Fish Resources

open access: yesDiversity, 2023
The study of assemblages of fish in their early phases in estuaries is an essential approach to understanding the functioning of these types of ecosystems and their role as nursery grounds for some marine fish species.

Oceanographic heterogeneity facilitates gelatinous zooplankton niche space and diversity

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Gelatinous zooplankton serve diverse ecological roles in shelf food webs—from grazers to predators. However, their spatial niches are poorly resolved, especially at detailed taxonomic levels, due to conventional techniques that are unable to measure distributions at fine spatial scales.

Coastal aquaculture farms for the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus provide spawning and first-year nursery grounds for wild black rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii: A case study from the Luanhe River estuary, Bohai bay, the Bohai Sea, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Aquaculture farms are known to attract wild organisms from nearby areas. Sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus aquaculture farms in Bohai Bay, the Bohai Sea, China, might provide spawning and nursery grounds for wild black rockfish Sebastes schlegelii ...

Assemblage structure of ichthyoplankton in the NE Atlantic in spring under contrasting hydrographic conditions

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
The ichthyoplankton assemblage in the Atlantic region off the NW Iberian peninsula (AR) and in the southern Bay of Biscay (SBB) and the response of the larval fish species distribution to the relatively rapidly changing hydrographic conditions in spring ...

Larval Entrainment Through Fort Randall and GAVINS Point Dams, Lewis and Clark Lake, South Dakota

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 10, Page 2205-2217, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Entrainment of Walleye Sander vitreus and Sauger Sander canadensis has been documented in all the Missouri River reservoirs in South Dakota and is a hypothesized mechanism through which source‐sink dynamics occur. However, an assessment of larval entrainment through Fort Randall Dam and Gavins Point Dam, which bound Lewis and Clark Lake, has ...

Efficacy of Oblique Bubble Screen Deterrents on Redirecting Live Eggs and Larvae of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) at Different Developmental Stages

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract Invasive carp have severely damaged aquatic ecosystems in the USA, particularly in the Mississippi River Basin. Behavioral deterrents have been developed in the last few decades to control population expansion into new ecosystems. However, none of these deterrents are capable of controlling early‐life stage carp, which have limited or no ...

Larval Fish Community in the Northwestern Iberian Upwelling System during the Summer Period

open access: yesOceans, 2021
The Galician shelf (northwestern Iberian Peninsula) is a highly dynamic area with an important multi-species fisheries industry that exploits resources from several habitats, characterized by being not only highly diverse, rich, and productive but also ...
