First three-dimensional skull of the Middle Triassic mixosaurid ichthyosaur Phalarodon fraasi from Svalbard, Norway [PDF]

open access: yesActa Palaeontologica Polonica, 2022
The marine Middle Triassic sediments of Svalbard are rich in fossiliferous material and are particularly well-known for marine reptile fossils. Here, we present a new specimen of the small-bodied mixosaurid ichthyosaur Phalarodon fraasi from the ...

Osteology and phylogeny of Late Jurassic ichthyosaurs from the Slottsmøya Member Lagerstätte (Spitsbergen, Svalbard) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Palaeontologica Polonica, 2019
Phylogenetic relationships within the important ichthyosaur family Ophthalmosauridae are not well established, and more specimens and characters, especially from the postcranial skeleton, are needed.

Morphology of the temporal skull region in tetrapods: research history, functional explanations, and a new comprehensive classification scheme

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 96, Issue 5, Page 2229-2257, October 2021., 2021
ABSTRACT The morphology of the temporal region in the tetrapod skull traditionally has been a widely discussed feature of vertebrate anatomy. The evolution of different temporal openings in Amniota (mammals, birds, and reptiles), Lissamphibia (frogs, salamanders, and caecilians), and several extinct tetrapod groups has sparked debates on the ...

A Phalarodon (Ichthyosauria: Mixosauridae) from the Middle Triassic of Svalbard [PDF]

open access: yesNorwegian Journal of Geology, 2016
A new specimen of Phalarodon from the Middle Triassic Botneheia Formation on Svalbard, although not complete, is well preserved with both cranial and postcranial elements. Uncompressed preservation of the rostrum reveals the dental groove divided by alveolar bone between the teeth.

New data on the ichthyosaur Platypterygius hercynicus and its implications for the validity of the genus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The description of a nearly complete skull from the late Albian of northwestern France reveals previously unknown anatomical features of Platypterygius hercynicus (Kuhn 1946), and of European Cretaceous ichthyosaurs in general.
