X‐linked ichthyosis: Clinical and molecular findings in 35 Italian patients

Recessive X‐linked ichthyosis (XLI), the second most common ichthyosis, is caused by mutations in the STS gene encoding the steroid sulfatase enzyme. A complete deletion of the STS gene is found in 85%‐90% of cases.

Two clinical forms of ichthyosis in cattle have been reported, ichthyosis fetalis and congenital ichthyosis. Ichthyosis poses animal welfare and economic issues and the more severe form, ichthyosis fetalis, is lethal.

TREATMENT OF ICHTHYOSIS

The results of treatment in 2 cases of ichthyosis in soldiers are presented in this paper. The report of Rapaport, Herman and Lehman 1 suggested a vitamin A deficiency as an etiologic factor of ichthyosis. High oral doses of vitamin A, 60,000 to 200,000 units daily, produced favorable clinical results in all the 6 patients treated.

The oral mucosae of the lips and muzzle appeared histologically normal. Mitotic chromosomes were visualised with conventional staining and RBA-banding from non-synchronised cultures of peripheral blood lymphocytes of the affected calves and their relatives (De Grouchy and others 1964, Dutrillaux and others 1973).
