Explicit description of viral capsid subunit shapes by unfolding dihedrons

open access: yesCommunications Biology
Viral capsid assembly and the design of capsid-based nanocontainers critically depend on understanding the shapes and interfaces of constituent protein subunits. However, a comprehensive framework for characterizing these features is still lacking. Here,

The Equivalence Between Unit-Cell Twinning and Tiling in Icosahedral Quasicrystals

open access: yes, 2017
It is shown that tiling in icosahedral quasicrystals can also be properly described by cyclic twinning at the unit cell level. The twinning operation is applied on the primitive prolate golden rhombohedra, which can be considered a result of a distorted ...

Icosahedral Symmetry and Quantum Gravity [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Trends in Mathematics, 2015
In this note we will show that Theta functions are a solution of the icosahedron equation and also a solution of the Ernst equation for the stationary axisymmetric case of Einstein’s gravitational equation.

The Ammann–Kramer–Neri tiling model of a P‐ZnMgEr Bergman‐type quasicrystal based on in‐house X‐ray diffraction

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section B, EarlyView.
A structural solution is presented of a primitive icosahedral ZnMgEr quasicrystal representing the Bergman‐type family. The structure model is based on atomic decoration of the Ammann–Kramer–Neri tiling. This study presents the atomic structure solution of a primitive icosahedral Zn70.83Mg20.31Er8.86 quasicrystal using in‐house X‐ray diffraction and the

Single-particle imaging without symmetry constraints at an X-ray free-electron laser

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2018
The analysis of a single-particle imaging (SPI) experiment performed at the AMO beamline at LCLS as part of the SPI initiative is presented here. A workflow for the three-dimensional virus reconstruction of the PR772 bacteriophage from measured single ...

Elastic Lennard-Jones Polymers Meet Clusters -- Differences and Similarities

open access: yes, 2009
We investigate solid-solid and solid-liquid transitions of elastic flexible off-lattice polymers with Lennard-Jones monomer-monomer interaction and anharmonic springs by means of sophisticated variants of multicanonical Monte Carlo methods.

Crystallography of quasicrystals ; application to icosahedral symmetry

open access: yesJournal de Physique, 1988
Crystallographic concepts are extended to quasicrystalline structures and applied to icosahedral quasicrystals. 2-dimensional N fold rotational symmetries are shown to be compatible with Bravais lattices in (at least) ϕ (N) dimensions, where ϕ (N) is the Euler number, while for 3-dimensional icosahedral symmetry the minimal dimension is 6.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Plant‐produced encapsulin displays non‐typhoidal Salmonella enterica antigens and assembles into mosaic nanoparticles

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This study investigates the potential of encapsulin as an antigen display platform for the development of a candidate Salmonella vaccine for poultry. Encapsulin constructs were transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana where they accumulated to high levels.
