Leafhopper Taxa and Populations in Southern Idaho

open access: yesPhytoFrontiers
Plant pathogens, including viruses, phytoplasmas, and spiroplasmas, can be transmitted by leafhoppers, which can cause important yield-limiting diseases in vegetables, orchard crops, vineyards, and field crops.

Free Calcium Concentration, Calpain-2 Activity, and Final Product Tenderness of Electrically Stimulated Beef

open access: yesMeat and Muscle Biology, 2020
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of timing of electrical stimulation on free calcium concentration, calpain-2 activity, Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and consumer sensory analysis.

Molecular Detection of Vertebrates in Stream Water: A Demonstration Using Rocky Mountain Tailed Frogs and Idaho Giant Salamanders

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Stream ecosystems harbor many secretive and imperiled species, and studies of vertebrates in these systems face the challenges of relatively low detection rates and high costs.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Patterns and trends of heat and wildfire smoke indicators across rural–urban and social vulnerability gradients in Idaho

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Health
Climate change poses a grave threat to human health with disparate impacts across society. While populations with high social vulnerability generally bear a larger burden of exposure to and impact from environmental hazards; such patterns and trends are ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

An efficient instance segmentation approach for studying fission gas bubbles in irradiated metallic nuclear fuel

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Gaseous fission products from nuclear fission reactions tend to form fission gas bubbles of various shapes and sizes inside nuclear fuel. The behavior of fission gas bubbles dictates nuclear fuel performances, such as fission gas release, grain growth ...

Evaluation of SMAP Freeze/Thaw Retrieval Accuracy at Core Validation Sites in the Contiguous United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Seasonal freeze-thaw (FT) impacts much of the northern hemisphere and is an important control on its water, energy, and carbon cycle. Although FT in natural environments extends south of 45°N, FT studies using the L-band have so far been restricted to ...

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).
