Effects of Weight Loss on Vascular Function in Obese Individuals with Poor Cardiovascular Health: Design and Research Protocol of an Interventional Clinical Trial

open access: yesArtery Research, 2020
Introduction: Excessive adipose tissue is associated with adverse metabolic effects and is an important risk factor for chronic diseases. According to the American Heart Association, most cardiovascular events can be prevented by adhering to healthy ...

Mobile-phone text messaging to promote ideal cardiovascular health in women

open access: yesOpen Heart, 2023
Objective Ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) was developed to promote CVH as a key component of primordial prevention. Mobile short message service (SMS) is useful for improving health behaviours.

Association of ideal cardiovascular health with cardiovascular events and risk advancement periods in a Mediterranean population-based cohort

open access: yesBMC Medicine, 2022
Background The American Heart Association recommends Life’s Simple 7 as ideal cardiovascular health (ICVH) to reduce cardiovascular risk. Rate advancement period (RAP), a useful tool to quantify and communicate exposure impact on risks, may enhance ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Identification and characterisation of calcitonin receptor isoforms expressed in glioblastoma derived glioma stem and U‐87 MG cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Glioblastoma cells express calcitonin receptor variants (CT receptor isoforms) that may help them survive stress. Using qPCR, transcript‐specific long‐read nanopore sequencing, immunofluorescence co‐localisation and comparative sequence analysis, this study identifies a novel alternatively spliced CALCR transcript that encodes the CTb receptor isoform ...

IDEAL CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH METRICS IN COUPLES: A COMMUNITY-BASED POPULATION STUDY

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2017
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Better understanding of CVD determinants is needed to decrease CVD risk. We hypothesized that ideal CVD health metrics are mostly concordant among heterosexual spousal or cohabitating couples.

Chronobiology of Cancer: How Aging Fuels Oncogenesis at the Molecular Level

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates the key biological pathways linking aging with cancer development and progression. In the upper left, cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, toxins, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes DNA damage and genomic instability, whereas age‐related decline in repair mechanisms, such as ATM/ATR, BER, and NER ...

The Role of Calcitonin Gene‐Related Peptide in High‐Altitude Headache: A Prospective Field Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective High‐altitude headache (HAH) is a common neurological condition associated with rapid ascent to high altitude. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying HAH remain incompletely understood. Calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP), a neuropeptide implicated in migraine pathophysiology, may play a key role in the pathophysiology of ...
