Attitudes: Keys to problem identification

This paper introduces attitudes as a mechanism for establishing goal states during general problem solving. Several basic algorithms are presented by which attitudes can be computed based on knowledge easily captured in a knowledge base. Finally, the use of attitudes during problem solving is illustrated.
