High-performing heuristics to minimize flowtime in no-idle permutation flowshop

open access: yes, 2019
In this article, the issue of production scheduling in a no-idle flowshop environment is addressed. An extensive literature review has shown that there are no heuristics specifically proposed for this problem, especially when it comes to constructive ...

"It Started as a Joke": On the Design of Idle Games

open access: yesACM SIGCHI Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play, 2019
With idle games, active withdrawal from the game comprises an essential part of gameplay as players wait for the game state to change over time. This mode of interaction is paradigmatic for the change of roles technologies have in our lives. However, the

Identifying Physical Interactions in Contact‐Based Robot Manipulation for Learning from Demonstration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Robots can learn manipulation tasks from human demonstrations. This work proposes a versatile method to identify the physical interactions that occur in a demonstration, such as sequences of different contacts and interactions with mechanical constraints.

Interpassivity and the Joy of Delegated Play in Idle Games

open access: yesTrans. Digit. Games Res. Assoc., 2018
This paper examines the youngest video games genre, the so called idle (incremental) game, also referred to as the passive, self-playing or clicker game, which seems to challenge the current understanding of digital games as systems, based on a human ...

Long‐Term Elevated CO2 Improves Soil Health and Rice Yields in Paddy Fields

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Combining the two longest‐running rice free‐air CO2 enrichment experiments with a global data synthesis, this study demonstrates that long‐term elevated CO2 consistently enhances soil health. In rice paddies, this improvement sustains the CO2 fertilization effect over decades.
