Beyond Presumptions: Toward Mechanistic Clarity in Metal‐Free Carbon Catalysts for Electrochemical H2O2 Production via Data Science

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Metal‐free carbon catalysts enable the sustainable synthesis of hydrogen peroxide via two‐electron oxygen reduction; however, active site complexity continues to hinder reliable interpretation. This review critiques correlation‐based approaches and highlights the importance of orthogonal experimental designs, standardized catalyst passports ...

Flexoelectrically Induced Polar Topology in Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Twisted SrTiO3 bilayers host polar vortices of flexoelectric origin, revealed through combined experiment and theory. By reconstructing polarization from the toroidal moment of strain gradients, the work establishes a 3D chiral state with broken inversion and mirror symmetries.

Topology and Material Optimization in Ultra‐Soft Magneto‐Active Structures: Making Advantage of Residual Anisotropies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Residual magnetization induces pronounced mechanical anisotropy in ultra‐soft magnetorheological elastomers, shaping deformation and actuation even without external magnetic fields. This study introduces a computational‐experimental framework integrating magneto‐mechanical coupling into topology optimization for designing soft magnetic actuators with ...

Ignoring endotoxin [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Experimental Medicine, 2006
In 1947, Paul Beeson showed that rabbits repeatedly injected with certain bacteria eventually become resistant to the bacteria's fever-provoking effects—a phenomenon known as endotoxin tolerance.

Measuring the Hall Effect in Hysteretic Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The authors highlight common pitfalls in measuring the Hall effect: in hysteretic magnets, improper data processing can create signals that look exotic but are not real. This Perspective explains the origin of these artifacts and presents practical measurement strategies that help researchers identify reliable Hall responses in complex magnetic ...

Ignoring patents

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2007
More than 2.5 million United States patents have been issued in the lasttwenty years. While these patents are spread across all industries, a largepercentage are concentrated in the information technology (IT) industries, and others in biotechnology.

Field‐Programmed Anisotropy in Magneto‐Piezoelectric Composites for Material‐Encoded Mechanoperception

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Field‐programmed anisotropy imparts material‐level intelligence to soft composites. Magnetic torque dynamics drive magneto‐piezoelectric nanowires from random dispersion into deterministic axial alignment. The resulting hierarchical percolation networks confine electromechanical coupling to specific axes and intrinsically decouple superposed force ...

The Arrogance of Ignorance—Ignoring the Ubiquitous [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Zoologist, 1984
Anti-evolution, the rise of pseudo sciences, and the renewed interest in the occult, all masquerading as science, are symptomatic of the poor job that is done explicating science as a process and a way of knowing. Disciplinary teaching emphasizes fact over concept. Every science discipline should be taught witha process base pervasive from the first to

Giant Anisotropy and High Second‐Order Nonlinearity of 3R‐MoS2 for Multifunctional Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Graphical abstract highlights, 3R‐polytype of MoS2 (3R‐MoS2) as a multifunctional photonic platform enabled by giant optical anisotropy and optical nonlinearities, demonstrating subdiffractional waveguiding, giant second‐harmonic (SH) generation, and high‐performance reflective polarization control.
