Economic effects of disease outbreaks on U.S. salmonid farms

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract The U.S. salmonid industry is the second‐largest finfish sector of U.S. aquaculture, contributing $886 million and more than 2000 jobs to the U.S. economy in 2022. The goal of this study was to develop an economic analysis of the impact of losses from disease outbreaks to the U.S. salmonid industry.

An electron micrographic study of IHNV and IPNV : development of methods for determining particle-infectivity ratios and for rapid diagnosis

open access: yes
A rapid virus detection method was developed for Infectious Hemotopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHNV). The virus detection method could be applied to Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus (IPNV) under certain conditions.

Comparative analysis of the acute response of the trout, O. mykiss, head kidney to in vivo challenge with virulent and attenuated infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus and LPS-induced inflammation

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2008
Background The response of the trout, O. mykiss, head kidney to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or active and attenuated infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV and attINHV respectively) intraperitoneal challenge, 24 and 72 hours post-injection,

Challenges and emerging trends in fish vaccine platforms, delivery methods, and field performance for sustainable aquaculture: A scoping review

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract Fish vaccination has been practiced globally for several decades and is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of sustainable disease management in aquaculture, offering an effective alternative to antibiotic and chemotherapeutic use. This PRISMA‐ScR guided Scoping Review synthesized evidence from 173 peer‐reviewed studies and reports to ...

Re‐emergent snakehead rhabdovirus in Thailand after two decades: Isolation and genomic characterization

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV) is a novirhabdovirus associated with disease outbreaks in warm‐water fish in Southeast Asia, including striped snakehead (Channa striata), but recent information on SHRV in Thai snakehead aquaculture remains limited.

Isolation, Identification, and Molecular Evolutionary Analysis of Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHNV) from Farmed Rainbow Trout in Southwest China [PDF]

open access: yes
IHNV troubled the salmon breeding industry in China for years, and it often causes large-scale deaths. To study the disease characteristics of IHNV and its epidemiology in China, this study isolated and sequenced the Whole genome of an IHNV strain (IHNV ...

A nuclear localization of the infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus NV protein is necessary for optimal viral growth.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
The nonvirion (NV) protein of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) has been previously reported to be essential for efficient growth and pathogenicity of IHNV.

Comparison of Selected Immune Parameters in a Single Infection and Co-Infection with Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus with Other Viruses in Rainbow Trout

open access: yesPathogens, 2022
Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) often occurs in an aquatic environment in co-infection with other viruses. In this study, we wanted to investigate the effect of this virus on the course of co-infection with other viruses in rainbow trout. For

Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) in fish and its consequences for fish farming: A comprehensive review

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Viral diseases are a major concern in finfish aquaculture, leading to severe health problems. Infectious hematopoietic necrosis (IHN) is a highly transmissible systemic viral disease that primarily affects salmonids, causing significant mortality and economic losses to the salmonid farming industry.
