Ilex decidua: Possumhaw

open access: yesEDIS, 2014
This native North American tree is often seen as a spreading 8 to 10-foot-high shrub but can also become a 20-foot-tall tree when planted in partial shade. Although the two to three-inch-long, dark green leaves are deciduous they do not present any appreciable fall color change. From March to May, small white flowers appear among the leaves.

Spatial and temporal variation in survival of female wild turkeys

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 5, July 2026.
We monitored 370 female wild turkeys across North Carolina's 3 ecoregions from 2020‐2022 to understand factors influencing their survival. Female survival varied by ecoregion and behavior state, with the incubation period having the lowest survival rates. None of the land cover variables affected survival.

Effects of long‐term nitrogen addition on two dominant species in a drought‐prone Mediterranean forest

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract This study aimed to assess the long‐term effects of nitrogen (N) addition on recruitment, growth, survival, and physiological responses in Quercus ilex and Phillyrea latifolia, two codominant species typical in the Mediterranean forests. Here, we present a 9‐year N addition experiment (20 kg N ha−1 year−1, δ15N‐enriched) in an N‐limited ...

Experimental Assessment of the Effects of Substrate Choice on the Duration of Chemical Signals in Fecal Scent‐Marks of Free‐Ranging Iberian Wolves

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 345, Issue 5, Page 462-475, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Chemical communication, typically based on feces, urine, and glandular secretions, often deposited as substrate scent marks, plays a key role in social organization and communication among many mammals, especially carnivores. This study assesses experimentally whether the type of substrate chosen for fecal deposition and the temperature ...

Pedunculoside Inhibits Hepatocellular Carcinoma Progression by Activating the MAPK Signaling Pathway Through Targeting and Suppressing CDK4

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 3171-3189, June 2026.
Pedunculoside targets and suppresses CDK4; consequently, it activates the MAPK pathway and inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma progression. ABSTRACT Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a major challenge in cancer prevention and treatment, highlighting the urgent need for effective and low‐toxicity anti‐HCC therapies. Recently, CDK4‐targeted inhibitors

Characterisation and In Planta Activity of Bacteriophages That Infect the Key Bacterial Species Associated With Acute Oak Decline

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
Phages that infect the oak pathogens Brenneria goodwinii and Gibbsiella quercinecans were isolated. The phages were able to effectively reduce bacterial populations of their respective hosts in vitro. However, when applied in planta, the phages did not reduce host populations and instead phages and bacteria co‐existed over time.

Minor epic: Notes toward a different “Anthropoetry”

open access: yesAnthropology and Humanism, Volume 51, Issue 1, June 2026.
