Modifications of the Ilizarov Apparatus

2017
As surgeons around the world realized that distraction osteogenesis could occur in the proper mechanical environment, there followed the development of external fixators that would simplify the mounting strategy and ease of application. These included the use of half-pins in place of tensioned wires, the employment of monolateral fixators, and the ...

Gradual closed correction of equinus contracture using the Ilizarov apparatus

Journal of Orthopaedic Science, 2003
We treated 16 patients with equinus contracture using the Ilizarov method without open soft tissue release. No hinge was used in seven patients; instead, their ankle joint was used as the hinge (natural hinge; unconstrained construct). In the remaining nine patients, medial and lateral hinges connecting the tibial and foot rings were placed at the ...

Correction of juxtaarticular deformities in children using the Ilizarov apparatus

Journal of Orthopaedic Science, 2005
Deformity correction using external fixation was performed for various disorders in children. We reviewed 18 children who underwent juxtaarticular deformity correction using the Ilizarov apparatus with either a transverse or focal dome osteotomy. The amount of deformity correction, external fixation time, external fixation index, length gained, and ...

TREATMENT OF MALUNION AND NONUNION AT THE SITE OF AN ANKLE FUSION WITH THE ILIZAROV APPARATUS

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-American Volume, 2005
Malunion and nonunion of an ankle fusion site are associated with pain, osteomyelitis, limb-length discrepancy, and deformity. The Ilizarov reconstruction has been used to treat these challenging problems. We reviewed the results in twenty-one ankles that had undergone a revision of a failed fusion, with simultaneous treatment of coexisting pathologic ...

The Principles of the Ilizarov Apparatus

2019
This chapter briefly narrates the history and evolution of an ideal variety of treatment for numerous orthopedic conditions where difficulty is experienced in achieving union simultaneously in different dimensions with increased chances. This technique is an extremely useful tool in the armamentarium of an orthopedic surgeon today.

[Application of the Ilizarov apparatus in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis].

Chirurgia narzadow ruchu i ortopedia polska, 1999
Illizarov apparatus has been applied to stabilize "dome" high tibial osteotomy in 14 cases (11 females and 3 males). The age of patients ranged from 22 to 77 years (mean 60.3 years). Varus deformity was present in 12 cases (mean 18 deg) and valgus in 2 (mean 20 deg). The Dihlman's classification of knee osteoarthritis was used.

Investigation of the strength and rigidity of Kirschner spokes in the apparatus of G. A. Ilizarov

Biomedical Engineering, 1973
Investigation has shown that for ensuring strength of a spoke it is first of all necessary correctly to combine the initial, setting tensile force of the spoke and the subsequent compressive force. It is desirable to construct graphs of the values of Tx and f and compile tables from which the orthopedist can get recommendations for choosing the initial

[The Ilizarov apparatus in pseudoarthrosis of the long bones].

Harefuah, 1993
Distraction osteogenesis with the Ilizarov technique is effective in achieving bone healing in both atrophic and infected pseudoarthrosis. In 10 patients with atrophic and 14 with infected pseudoarthrosis treated by this method, solid bone union with reconstruction of anatomical limb length was achieved in all except 1.

The Ilizarov apparatus in the treatment of congenital dysmetria of the leg.

Italian journal of orthopaedics and traumatology, 1989
The effectiveness of the treatment of congenital leg length discrepancy depends on careful evaluation and selection before embarking on a programme of treatment. Over the years several types of surgery have been used to correct leg length discrepancy, starting with Codivilla (1905), who performed osteotomy followed by gradual transcalcaneal traction ...
