Pediatric Applications of the Ilizarov Method

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1992
Since mid-1987, more than 250 applications of the Ilizarov technique have been successful in treating a variety of pediatric orthopedic problems. The principles of the method are the same in adults and children. Careful preoperative planning and close follow-up evaluation during distraction are important to success.

Treatment of Tibia Vara by the Ilizarov Method

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2003
Sixty-nine lower extremities of 45 patients (mean age, 10 years 8 months) with tibia vara were treated with the Ilizarov circular external fixator and distraction osteogenesis. Twenty-four of the patients had bilateral involvement, six of whom had simultaneous surgery and the remaining 18 had staged operations 8 to 12 months apart.

Correction of genu recurvatum by the Ilizarov method

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1999
The Ilizarov apparatus was used to carry out opening-wedge callotasis of the proximal tibia in ten patients who had suffered premature asymmetrical closure of the proximal tibial physis and subsequent genu recurvatum. In four knees, the genu recurvatum was entirely due to osseous deformity, whereas in six it was associated with capsuloligamentous ...

The Ilizarov method in infected nonunion of fractures

Injury, 2000
Thirty patients with infected non-union of long bones were treated with radical resection of the necrotic bone and bone transport or compression/distraction osteosynthesis. Non-union, infection, deformity, bone gap and shortening were all addressed simultaneously using the Ilizarov principles. There were 15 cases with bone loss ranging from 4 to 12 cm (

The Ilizarov Method

Physical Therapy, 1992
To the Editor: I am delighted to see an article such as “The Ilizarov Procedure: Limb Lengthening and Its Implications” by Simard and colleagues ( Phys Ther . 1992;72:25–34) being published in the physical therapy literature! Limb lengthening by gradual incremental distraction methods (eg, the Ilizarov method) requires intensive intervention by our ...

Limb lengthening in achondroplasia by Ilizarov's method

International Orthopaedics, 1988
In achondroplasts limb lengthening can restore the normal proportion of the body. The Ilizarov method of limb lengthening has been used in 37 patients, 23 of whom have had an adequate follow-up after operation. In this technique the cortex of the bone is partially cut, leaving the medulla intact; the two bone segments are then subjected to distraction ...

THE ILIZAROV METHOD FOR COMPLEX FRACTURE NONUNIONS

The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1994
Nonunion of complex fractures continues to challenge orthopedic trauma surgeons. Although traditional management results in a successful outcome in 50% to 80% of cases, the Ilizarov method has been reported to be more effective. We evaluated the efficacy of the Ilizarov method for treatment of nonunions.Patients were selected based on the presence of ...

Bone tumor reconstruction with the Ilizarov method

Journal of Surgical Oncology, 2012
AbstractBackground and ObjectivesPatients with musculoskeletal tumors can face large bone deficiency, deformity, and nonunion. Distraction osteogenesis via the Ilizarov method may be useful for reconstruction of these deficiencies allowing limb preservation and optimizing function.MethodsWe reviewed 20 patients with a range of musculoskeletal tumors ...
