Space suit may have orthotic applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
Application of movable joints for spacesuits to orthotic and prosthetic devices is discussed. Specifications of the joints, degrees of movement, and details of construction are described.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Magnetic circuitry mutual coupling probe [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
Development of magnetic probe for nondestructive testing of multilayer printed circuit boards to determine existence of opens or shorts is reported. Components of probe are described and procedures for operation are discussed.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

High pressure liquid gas pump [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
Design and development of two types of pumps for handling liquefied gases are discussed. One pump uses mechanical valve shift and other uses pneumatic valve shift.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Catalogue for identification of the most common lacustrine and riverine cyclopoid copepod (Crustacea) species in plankton of La Plata Basin, South America [PDF]

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba)
A practical guide for the taxonomic identification of 25 species and subspecies of free-living cyclopoid copepods from the La Plata Basin, the second largest river basin in South America, is presented.
