An investigation of the flow characteristics in the bootdeck region of a scale model notchback saloon vehicle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The results of an experimental investigation of the bootdeck flow structure of a 36 per cent scale model notchback car are presented together with a general review of advanced laser diagnostic techniques suitable for large-scale wind tunnel flow ...

Study on visualization of water mixing flows in a digester equipped with a vertical impeller by using radiotracers

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2020
A mixer with a new concept design has been adapted into water treatment plants. It reportedly cuts down the energy consumption of the mixer by the new mixer, which moves vertically and creates internal flows toward its bottom.

System Identification of Robotic Fish Swimming Reveals Roles of Reactive and Resistive Fluid Force in Two Distinct Swimming Gaits

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
System identification and particle image velocimetry reveal how a modular robotic fish changes thrust physics across gaits. A traveling‐wave, fish‐like motion draws thrust from resistive drag, while a resonant standing‐wave motion is driven by reactive pressure.

Combined Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry and Line Integral Convolution Methods: Application to a Sphere Sedimenting Near a Wall in a Non-Newtonian Fluid. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The flow fields for a sphere sedimenting through a Newtonian and two non-Newtonian liquids near a wall in a square tank are investigated using 3-D stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) and line integral convolution (LIC) methods.

Digital particle image velocimetry measurements of the downwash distribution of a desert locust Schistocerca gregaria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Actuator disc models of insect flight are concerned solely with the rate of momentum transfer to the air that passes through the disc. These simple models assume that an even pressure is applied across the disc, resulting in a uniform downwash ...

Particle Image Velocimetry in practice

open access: yes, 2009
Experimental fluid mechanics has for a long time been used to visualize flow phenomenon. An early pioneer was Ludwig Prandtl who used aluminum particles in water flumes to describe the flow in a qualitative manner. In line with the rapid development of Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD, the need for new validation tools has increased.

Cteno‐Bot: An Untethered Metachronally Swimming Robot With Magnetoactive Propulsors

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
We present Cteno‐bot, an untethered ctenophore‐inspired robot which swims using metachronally coordinated appendages. A single mechanism controls up to 216 magnetoactive propulsors via a dynamically varying magnetic field. We show that the swimming speed of the robot can be increased without a corresponding increase in power requirement, simply by ...

Formation of the leading-edge vortex and spanwise flow on an insect-like flapping-wing throughout a flapping half cycle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents an experimental investigation of the evolution of the leading-edge vortex and spanwise flow generated by an insect-like flapping-wing at a Reynolds number relevant to flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FMAVs) (Re = ~15,000 ...

Complexity Analysis of Bubble Plumes in Power Law Fluids Based on Chaos Theory

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In order to reveal the complexity of the internal flow of bubble plume in power law fluid, the flow characteristics and chaotic characteristics of plume are studied by experiment and theory. The chaotic characteristic parameters (correlation dimension D, K entropy, and Lyapunov exponent λ) of gas velocity under different superficial gas ...

An experimental study of particle sedimentation using ultrasonic speckle velocimetry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ultrasonic speckle velocimetry (USV) is a non-invasive technique that allows the measurement of fluid velocity in flow and also that of powders under sedimentation.
