Assessment of the CORONA series of satellite imagery for landscape archaeology: a case study from the Orontes valley, Syria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In 1995, a large database of satellite imagery with worldwide coverage taken from 1960 until 1972 was declassified. The main advantages of this imagery known as CORONA that made it attractive for archaeology were its moderate cost and its historical ...

Real-time people and vehicle detection from UAV imagery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A generic and robust approach for the real-time detection of people and vehicles from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) is an important goal within the framework of fully autonomous UAV deployment for aerial reconnaissance andsurveillance.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Review of Synthetic Aperture Radar Automatic Target Recognition: A Dual Perspective on Classical and Deep Learning Techniques

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
With advances in both classical and modern methods, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR) has made enormous progress. This article reviews a wide range of SAR ATR techniques, from model- and template-based approaches to ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This
