Immersed Boundary Methods

2016
Analysis of flow over bodies with complex surface geometry can pose a challenge in terms of spatial discretization. Creating a high quality boundary fitted mesh can not only be difficult but also time consuming especially when there are complex flow structures over intricate boundary geometry that need to be resolved in the simulations.

Immersed Boundary Projection Methods

2020
Immersed boundary methods are an attractive alternative to body-fitted grids for complex geometries and fluid–structure interaction problems. The simplicity of the underlying Cartesian mesh allows for a number of useful conservation and stability properties to be embedded in the numerics, and for the resulting discrete equations to be solved ...

A discontinuous‐Galerkin‐based immersed boundary method

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2008
AbstractA numerical method to approximate partial differential equations on meshes that do not conform to the domain boundaries is introduced. The proposed method is conceptually simple and free of user‐defined parameters. Starting with a conforming finite element mesh, the key ingredient is to switch those elements intersected by the Dirichlet ...

From Immersed Boundary Method to Immersed Continuum Methods

International Journal for Multiscale Computational Engineering, 2006
The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the newly proposed immersed continuum method in conjunction with the traditional treatment of fluidstructure interaction problems, the immersed boundary method, the extended immersed boundary method, the immersed finite element method, and the fictitious domain method.

Modeling deformable capsules in viscous flow using immersed boundary method

, 2020
This paper presents an immersed boundary method (IBM) for deformable capsules in incompressible viscous flow. Unlike the conventional IBM, the present method utilizes an unstructured mesh coupled with the moving least squares method, which improves the ...

Immersed boundary methods for heat transfer

International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat & Fluid Flow, 2016
Summary: Purpose{ } - The purpose of this paper is to present two different methods for the imposition of thermal boundary conditions (BCs) in the framework of two-phase flows: an immersed boundary method (IBM) and a Ghost cell method. Both methods are able to handle Dirichlet as well as Neumann BCs. { }Design/methodology/approach{ } - Direct numerical
