The impact behaviour of silk cocoons

Journal of Experimental Biology, 2013
SUMMARY Silk cocoons, constructed by silkmoths (Lepidoptera), are protective structural composites. Some cocoons appear to have evolved towards structural and material optimisation in order to sustain impact strikes from predators and hinder parasite ingress.

The impact behaviour of paints

Journal of Materials Science, 1994
The split Hopkinson pressure bar has been used to study the impact behaviour of a selection of single and multi-layer paint systems in the form of films of thickness 0.04 mm. Stress-strain curves are presented for systems comprising three coatings, coating A, coating B and coating C, in compression for strain rates of the order 5×103 s−1.

Behaviour of eggshells under impact

Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research, 1967
The behaviour of egg shells during impact was recorded, using an apparatus comprising basically a rod with an accelerometer mounted at the lower end, the rod being allowed to fall freely for a preselected distance to strike the egg with a force sufficient to fracture the strongest shell.

Impact behaviour of concrete beams

Materials and Structures, 1987
An instrumented impact machine was used to carry out impact tests on concrete beams, 100×125 mm in cross-section and 1400 mm long. The simply supported beams were struck at their midpoints by a 345 kg mass impact hammer, dropped from various heights.

Impact Behaviour of Loaded Composites

1990
This article concerns tests on the impact behaviour of loaded carbon fibre reinforced plastics. In these investigations both stress-free specimens and specimens loaded uniaxially with compression stress of 25% and 50% of the compression strength (undamaged specimens) are tested.
