An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Relaxing Conservatism for Enhanced Impedance Range and Transparency in Haptic Interaction [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Haptics
The Time Domain Passivity Approach (TDPA) has been accepted as one of least conservative tools for designing stabilizing controllers in haptics and teleoperation, but it still suffers from conservatism because it is based on passivity. Additionally, high-frequency, immediate control actions lead to a degradation of transparency.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Enhancement of inductance along metallic mesh wires in three-dimensional quasi-isotropic metamaterials using high-ε dielectric particles for impedance-matching with free space

open access: yesEPJ Applied Metamaterials, 2019
In this paper, we consider cube-shaped unit cells including high-ε dielectric cubes under magnetic dipole-like resonance placed at the center and metallic mesh wires for negative permittivity to construct three-dimensional quasi-isotropic metamaterials ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Generalized Distribution of Relaxation Times Analysis for the Characterization of Impedance Spectra

open access: yesBatteries, 2019
Impedance spectroscopy is a universal nondestructive tool for the analysis of the polarization behavior of electrochemical systems in frequency domain. As an extension and enhancement of the standard impedance spectroscopy, the distribution of relaxation

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Focused Impedance Method (FIM-6) in localized lung ventilation study of the human body in a local setting

open access: yesJournal of Electrical Bioimpedance
The Focused Impedance method (FIM), an innovation by Dhaka University, Bangladesh, is a new technique for focusing a region of interest of a volume conductor through a simple enhancement of the age-old Tetra-Polar Impedance Method (TPIM). This innovation

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.
