Lattice Structures for Bone Replacement: The Intersection of Bone Biomechanics, Lattice Design, and Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review outlines how understanding bone's biology, hierarchical architecture, and mechanical anisotropy informs the design of lattice structures that replicate bone morphology and mechanical behavior. Additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of orthopedic implants that incorporate such structures using a range of engineering materials ...

Unsteady behaviour of opposite impinging jets interaction in crossflow

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2016
A mixing of fuel with air in jet engine is studied by analyzing unsteady turbulent flow in a simplified flow channel which consists of the opposed jets in a cross-flow.

Oscillation characteristics of mutually impinging dual jets in a mixing chamber

open access: yesThe Physics of Fluids, 2018
In this study, we consider the oscillatory behavior of mutually impinging jets in an enclosed, dome-shaped mixing chamber. The frequency of the impinging jet oscillations is dictated by the flow rate, with the oscillatory behavior being grouped into ...

Hydrodynamics of long jet impingement [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on Engineering Sciences, 2008
A circular turbulent long jet has been assessed numerically using the volume-of-fluid method to examine the hydrodynamics of a long jet before impingement and to inspect the flow structure of a radial thin layer spreading over a flat plate after impingement. Typical steel mill industrial parameters are used in the model.

Understanding and Circumventing Failure Mechanisms in Chalcogenide Optical Phase Change Material Ge2Sb2Se4Te

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 13, Issue 8, March 13, 2025.
Chalcogenide optical PCMs have gathered interest for their potential in compact, non‐volatile optics and photonics. Free‐space PCM metasurfaces require new considerations from phase change memory that need to be addressed for reliable scale‐up. Several failure mechanisms pertaining to free‐space PCM devices and layout methods are isolated to prevent ...

Flow Asymmetry in Symmetric Multiple Impinging Jets: A Large Eddy Simulation Approach

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering Research, 2011
A numerical study on in-line arrays of multiple turbulent round impinging jets on a flat heated plate was conducted. The Large Eddy Simulation turbulence model was used to capture details of the instantaneous and mean flow fields.

Enhancement of synthetic jets by means of an integrated valve-less pump Part II. Numerical and experimental studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The paper studies the performance of the new fluid jet actuator based on the novel principle of the generation of fluid jet, which has been presented in [Z. Travnicek, A.I. Fedorchenko, A.-B.

Rarefied planar jet and jet impingement flows [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2012
This paper presents three sets of analytical exact solutions to collisionless gas flows from a two-dimensional exit. The first set is free plume expanding into a vacuum, and the other two sets are collisionless plume impingement at a vertically set plate.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.
