A recent article in this Journal presented estimates of U.S. import-demand functions disaggregated by commodity groups and supplying countries [2]. In it, references were made to an unpublished paper which I had previously completed on the same subject, and in view of the interest generated by the estimates, it is useful to make them public.

This paper questions the standard assumption that inflation has no effect on import demand functions. We describe a simple method for testing whether proportionate changes in prices and income influence import demands. We estimate several import demand functions and provide, some evidence that inflation influences importers' demand.

This paper estimates disaggregated import demand function for Nigeria using annual data from 1970 to 2019. The study employs the Zivot-Andrews unit root and Gregory-Hansen cointegration tests to account for the role of structural breaks and the error correction mechanism for shortrun analysis, respectively.

A cost function analysis of import demand for Nigeria

The article uses a translog cost function to examine the substitution relations among capital, labour and imports. The results show that capital has a substitute relation with domestic labour and import. However, labour and import have complementary relationship.
