Import price adjustments with staggered import contracts

Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, 1992
Abstract In this paper we develop a linear rational expectations equilibrium model of staggered import contracts with incomplete exchange rate indexing to explain the slow and moderate adjustment of import prices and quantities to exchange rate changes.

Parallel imports, price controls, and innovation

Journal of Health Economics, 2018
The impact of parallel trade on innovation in R&D-intensive industries, such as pharmaceuticals, is a hotly debated question in antitrust and IP policy. The well-known argument that parallel trade dampens innovation by undermining firms' ability to price discriminate has been challenged by recent literature.

Import Price Uncertainty and the Distribution of Income [PDF]

open access: possibleReview of Economics and Statistics, 1997
In this paper we estimate oil and nonoil import demand functions for the United States under the assumption that import prices are uncertain. Both import demand functions are formally derived from an expected utility maximization problem, treating imports as inputs to the technology.

Globalisation, Import Prices and Inflation Dynamics [PDF]

open access: possibleSSRN Electronic Journal, 2008
In this paper we model the role of open-economy effects within a New Keynesian Phillips Curve (NKPC) via the inclusion of intermediate imports in firms' production technology. Using this framework we provide evidence on two questions: first, does the inclusion of import prices help explain post-war inflation dynamics in the United Kingdom, United ...

Journal of Applied Econometrics, 1988
AbstractThis paper presents an empirical investigation of the dynamics of prices, wages and import prices in a small open economy using data for Israel in the accelerating inflationary period of 1970–1983. The appropriateness of the specification of a price equation as a function of import prices and wages is critically reviewed using Sims's ...

Sticky import prices and J-curves

Economics Letters, 1994
We show that devaluations lead to a J-curve when imported goods are durable and import prices adjust slowly to exchange rate changes. The J-curve effect is caused by intertemporal speculation as import prices are low relative to future prices immediately after a devaluation. © 1994.

open access: possible, 2006
The growing theoretical and empirical literature suggests that globalization may have reduced inflation, particularly in high-income countries. Austria’s integration in the world economy has made a quantum leap over the past decade. Has this development dampened inflation in Austria?
