Overview of the use of clean cookstoves in the Brazilian semiarid region

open access: yesSustentabilidade em Debate, 2019
Wood cookstoves are common in the Brazilian semiarid region. Most families use traditional versions, which have a series of social, environmental and health-related impacts. “Improved cookstoves” refer to cleaner and more efficient cookstoves.

Improved testing for the efficiency of asset pricing theories in linear factor models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
This paper suggests a refinement of the standard T2 test statistic used in testing asset pricing theories in linear factor models. The test is designed to have improved power characteristics and to deal with the empirically important case where there are

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Coronary Artery Anomalies: the Efficiency in Diagnosis by the Improved Method in Autopsy Material

open access: yesЛьвівський клінічний вісник, 2016
Introduction. Coronary arteries anomalies can only be found during the pathomorphololgical detailed study because clinical symptoms are often absent. The coronary artery anomalies are classified as anomalies of origination, course, quantity, permeability

Arrayed-waveguide-grating light collector for on-chip spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We present a novel arrayed-waveguide-grating (AWG) device with improved external (biomedical) signal collection for use in on-chip spectroscopy. The collection efficiency of the device is compared to that of a standard AWG.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only
