Improved energy efficiency in wineries using data from audits [PDF]

open access: yesCiência e Técnica Vitivinícola, 2017
The wine production process has a high energy demand of about 1,750 million kWh per year in the EU. Saving energy, responsible consumption and efficient use of energy sources are key aspects to consider for the competitiveness and viability of the sector.

Opioid substitution: improving cost–efficiency

open access: yesBulletin of the World Health Organization, 2013
The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in its 2012 World drug report estimates that 0.6% of the world’s adult population – some 27 million people – are problem users of illicit drugs.1 This represents about 10% of all people who used illicit drugs in 2011 and suggests that most people can use drugs recreationally without becoming dependent.

Breeding for improved nitrogen use efficiency in oilseed rape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Oilseed rape has a high requirement for nitrogen (N) fertiliser relative to its seed yield. This paper uses published and unpublished work to explore the extent to which the N use efficiency (seed yield ÷ N supply) of oilseed rape could be improved ...

A scheme for dense coding in the non-symmetric quantum channel

open access: yes, 2003
We investigate the dense coding in the case of non-symmetric Hilbert spaces of the sender and receiver's particles sharing the quantum maximally entangled state. The efficiency of classical information gain is also considered.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Crosstalk between the ribosome quality control‐associated E3 ubiquitin ligases LTN1 and RNF10

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of the E3 ligase LTN1, the ubiquitin‐like modifier UFM1, or the deubiquitinating enzyme UFSP2 disrupts endoplasmic reticulum–ribosome quality control (ER‐RQC), a pathway that removes stalled ribosomes and faulty proteins. This disruption may trigger a compensatory response to ER‐RQC defects, including increased expression of the E3 ligase RNF10 ...

Surface grown copper nanowires for improved cooling efficiency

open access: yesCogent Engineering, 2018
The interactions between heat sink surfaces and coolant play important roles in cooling methods. This study relies upon controlled nanostructuring of heat sink surfaces that produces orders of magnitude increases in surface area, excites local vortexes ...

Interplay between circadian and other transcription factors—Implications for cycling transcriptome reprogramming

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This perspective highlights emerging insights into how the circadian transcription factor CLOCK:BMAL1 regulates chromatin architecture, cooperates with other transcription factors, and coordinates enhancer dynamics. We propose an updated framework for how circadian transcription factors operate within dynamic and multifactorial chromatin landscapes ...
