Application of Raman and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy to MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Visible to near infrared luminescence of MgO is studied on MgO‐C bricks and nominally pure MgO powder, with focus on two similar sharp high‐intensity signals, at 699 and 871 nm, each surrounded by symmetrical sidebands. The nature of these sidebands is investigated by temperature‐dependent spectroscopic measurements, confirming phonon involvement by ...

Plasmonic‐Hydrogel Hybrid Biomaterials Via In Situ Seeded Growth

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition
AbstractThe combination of hydrogels and functional plasmonic metal nanoparticles affords the development of unique hybrid systems, such as actuators, biosensors, and drug delivery systems, among others. Being typically prepared in colloidal suspension, incorporating shape‐controlled plasmonic nanoparticles on polymer substrates typically requires ...

Tailored Hierarchical Porous Copper Architectures via Three Dimensional Printing and Pressure‐less Sintering for Next‐Generation Lithium‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical porous copper current collector is fabricated via three‐dimensional printing combined with pressureless sintering to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The interconnected architecture lowers local current density, guides uniform Li deposition within pores, and suppresses dendrite growth.

Long branch-chains of amylopectin with B-type crystallinity in rice seed with inhibition of starch branching enzyme I and IIb resist in situ degradation and inhibit plant growth during seedling development

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2018
Background Endosperm starch provides prime energy for cereal seedling growth. Cereal endosperm with repression of starch branching enzyme (SBE) has been widely studied for its high resistant starch content and health benefit. However, in barley and maize,

Development of a Novel Biosensor-Driven Mutation and Selection System via in situ Growth of Corynebacterium crenatum for the Production of L-Arginine

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2020
The high yield mutants require a high-throughput screening method to obtain them quickly. Here, we developed an L-arginine biosensor (ARG-Select) to obtain increased L-arginine producers among a large number of mutant strains.

Characterization of a Recyclate‐Based MgO‐Steel Composite As‐Sintered Inert Anode Candidate After Exposure to Cryolite Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon‐free inert anodes are essential for decarbonizing aluminum electrolysis. This study investigates a recyclate‐based MgO‐316L steel composite anode tested under galvanostatic Hall–Héroult conditions in cryolite at 1000°C. Microstructural analysis reveals selective MgO fluorination, spinel and oxide layer formation, electrolyte infiltration, and ...

In Situ X‐Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study of Atomic Layer Deposited Cerium Oxide on SiO2: Substrate Influence on the Reaction Mechanism During the Early Stages of Growth

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces
Thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) of cerium oxide using commercial Ce(thd)4 precursor and O3 on SiO2 substrates is studied employing in‐situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

In-Situ Observations of Lithium Dendrite Growth

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
One of the root causes of lithium battery failure is lithium dendrite formation. Dendrites can result in internal short circuits and ultimately thermal runaway, fires, and explosions.

Epitaxial growth of Cu (001) on Si (001): Mechanisms of orientation development and defect morphology [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
We describe the evolution of microstructure during ultrahigh vacuum ion beam sputter deposition of Cu (001) at room temperature on hydrogen-terminated Si (001). In situ reflection high energy electron diffraction indicates growth of an epitaxial Cu (001)
