In situ stress determination by stress change monitoring
2020The in situ stresses are important design parameters in rock engineering. Unfortunately, conventional stress measurement techniques are expensive, difficult to execute, and often inconclusive due to spatial variations in stress or scale effects. An innovative and for many applications economical approach has been developed at the Geomechanics Research ...

The undisturbed in situ rock before an excavation is already under a certain stress. This stress-state is due to a variety of causes: gravity, stresses due to tectonic motions, the strata orientation, the creep and relaxation produced during geological periods, possible local unloading due to a relatively fast erosion, thermal contractions, etc.

In Situ Stress Gauge Calibration.
1977Abstract : The accuracy of 'in situ' stress measurements is dependent upon the presence of strain within the active gauge element. In gauge records of dynamic stress fields, the onset of strain response of the gauge is not able to be defined. Development of a gauge that responds only to the applied pressure, independent of the strain field, is usable ...

Understanding the stress state in the earth's crust is crucial for engineers working in rock, particularly with regard to underground construction. Experience shows that an adequately high horizontal in-situ stress has a positive effect in stabilizing large span rock caverns close to the ground surface.

In-Situ Stress Measurements During Drilling
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1986Summary This paper describes the results of six microfracturing experiments in a gas well in south Texas. The experiments were conducted in open hole and during the drilling operations. Microfracturing consisted of pumping very small volumes of drilling mud (tens of gallons) at very low rates (3 to 30 gal/min [189 ...

In-Situ Evaluation of Compressive Stresses
1988The use of terra cotta as a cladding material emerged in the 1880s and began to decline in the late 1930s. During this period, high-rise buildings employing terra cotta cladding included no provisions for differential movement between the cladding and structural framing.

In Situ Stress Measurements in Austria
1980In situ stress measurements were made at 6 locations in Austria, which were chosen in such a fashion as to yield information on the neotectonic stress in the country. Because of a strong influence of the Alpine topography, it was necessary to apply finite-element calculations for the interpretation of the field results.
