Holographic in situ stress measurements [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1986
A new instrument for measuring the in situ level of stress in boreholes has been developed. The instrument operates on the principle of locally relieving the stresses acting on a rock mass by drilling a small hole into the borehole surface and recording the resultant displacement field by holographic interferometry.

Measuring forces and stresses in situ in living tissues [PDF]

open access: yesDevelopment, 2016
Development, homeostasis and regeneration of tissues result from a complex combination of genetics and mechanics, and progresses in the former have been quicker than in the latter. Measurements of in situ forces and stresses appear to be increasingly important to delineate the role of mechanics in development. We review here several emerging techniques:

Advance of in-situ stress measurement in China

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2011
In-situ stress is an essential parameter for design and construction of most engineering projects that involve excavation in rocks. Progress in in-situ stress measurement from the 1950s in China is briefly introduced. Stress relief by overcoring technique and hydraulic fracturing technique are the two main techniques for in-situ stress measurement in ...

IN-SITU STRESS MEASUREMENT BY DOUBLE FRACTURING

open access: yesDoboku Gakkai Ronbunshu, 1989
In double fracturing, in contrast to the case with hydraulic fracturing where a peak pressure appears at the point of fracture initiation, the fracture length increases with a further increases in the loading pressure beyond the point of fracture initiation.

In situ stress measurement by neutron diffraction

open access: yes
The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of making in situ stress measurements of a tensile sample using neutron diffraction techniques. This study describes: 1) A tensile device for in situ application of uniaxial stress, and 2) A technique for determining the elastic component of strain in the elastic and elastic/ plastic regions ...
