Finding floral and faunal species richness optima among active fire regimes

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 6, December 2025.
Abstract Changing fire regimes have important implications for biodiversity and challenge traditional conservation approaches that rely on historical conditions as proxies for ecological integrity. This historical‐centric approach becomes increasingly tenuous under climate change, necessitating direct tests of environmental impacts on biodiversity.

Toward a functional understanding of novel fire regimes in tropical forests

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 112, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Climate change and land‐use alterations are driving forest fires to unprecedented frequencies and intensities worldwide. Even wet tropical forests—historically rarely subjected to fire—are increasingly experiencing fire disturbances. The impact of wildfires on these forests is likely large, since many of their tree species are not adapted to ...

Assessing spatial variability and efficacy of surrogate species at an ecosystem scale

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 5, October 2025.
Abstract Preserving biodiversity is a central goal of conservation, but, in practice, monitoring biodiversity often involves assessing population trends for one or a handful of species that are presumed proxies for biodiversity. Despite the popularity of surrogate species strategies, the links between biodiversity and surrogate species are rarely ...

Leaf Size and Shape Interact to Control Flammability: An Experiment With Artificial Leaves Cut From the Large‐Leaved Species Sapranthus palanga

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 5, September 2025.
We evaluated the flammability of leaves based on their shape and size. Rectangular and triangular shapes showed high flammability that did not vary with size, while circular shapes had minimal flammability, but it varied with size. These findings indicate that leaf shape and size impact flammability.
