On Incentives for Innovation [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2009
For science to thrive, it is crucial that the scientific community encourage the bold ambitions and innovative spirit of young researchers. In my own area of science, the United States could do much more to support this important goal. U.S. biomedical science is a large and important research enterprise that currently includes over 100,000 graduate ...

Incentive Processes in Finite Populations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
We define the incentive process, a natural generalization of the Moran process incorporating evolutionary updating mechanisms corresponding to well-known evolutionary dynamics, such as the logit, projection, and best-reply dynamics. Fixation probabilities and internal stable states are given for a variety of incentives, including new closed-forms, as ...

Developing a practical framework for the recruitment and retention of radiographers in the public sector of KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa

open access: yesOrapuh Journal
Introduction There is a notable lack of strategic recruitment and retention initiatives for radiographers in KwaZulu-Natal Province. This is evident in the disproportionate ratio of radiographers to the population they serve and the imbalance between

Reflections on Intellectual Property Benefit-Sharing in Employment Situations in Ghana

open access: yesThe African Journal of Information and Communication, 2016
Among the key justifications for protecting intellectual property rights (IPRs) is that they incentivise and reward human creativity and innovation. The incentive/reward rationale is expected to foster a culture of innovation across jurisdictions and to ...

A cellular system to study responses to a collision between the transcription complex and a protein‐bound nick in the DNA template

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

Incentive Engineering Framework for Crowdsourcing Systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Significant effort has been made to understand user motivation and to elicit user participation in crowdsourcing systems. However, incentive engineering, i.e., designing incentives that can purposefully motivate users, is still an open question and remains one of the key challenges of crowdsourcing initiatives.

Four hurdles for conservation on private land: the case of the golden lion tamarin, Atlantic Forest, Brazil.

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2015
Many threatened species worldwide rely on patches of remnant vegetation in private landholdings. To establish private reserves that contribute effectively to conservation involves a wide range of complex and interacting ecological, legal, social and ...

Interaction vesicles as emerging mediators of host‐pathogen molecular crosstalk and their implications for infection dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interaction extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are hybrid vesicles formed through host‐pathogen communication. They facilitate immune evasion, transfer pathogens' molecules, increase host cell uptake, and enhance virulence. This Perspective article illustrates the multifunctional roles of iEVs and highlights their emerging relevance in infection dynamics ...

Do obedience pressure and incentive affect whistleblowing?

open access: yesJournal of Accounting and Investment
Research aims: This study aims to empirically test the effect of obedience pressure on whistleblowing intentions and the role of incentives in moderating the obedience pressure on whistleblowing intentions.

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.
