Bionic Solar‐Powered Heavy Metal Trap for Eco‐Friendly Sludge Drying and Simultaneous Electricity Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, we propose a solar‐powered heavy metal trap (SPHT) for sludge disposal. The indoor experiments demonstrated that the sludge water content decreased from 90 % to 31 %, coupled with a decrease in heavy metal content to 6 % at most. Furthermore, the designed SPHT generated an initial potential of 0.10 V, and monitoring this hydrovoltaic potential ...

The Struggle for Sustainable Waste Management in Hong Kong: 1950s–2010s

open access: yesWorldwide Waste, 2019
As Hong Kong’s landfills are expected to reach saturated conditions by 2020, the city can no longer rely on landfilling alone as the sole solution for waste treatment in the long term. Drawing on five months of archival research at the University of Hong

Serum PFAS in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Firefighters From Six U.S. Airport Fire Departments

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Use of aqueous film‐forming foam (AFFF) is a source of exposure to per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for firefighters working in aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) settings. However, data characterizing the association between serum PFAS concentrations and exposure risk factors for ARFF firefighters are limited ...

Evaluation of Environmental Sustainability of Biorefinery and Incineration with Energy Recovery Based on Life Cycle Assessment

open access: yesFermentation
Based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and ISO standards, we compared the global environmental sustainability (ES) of two technologies that process the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) in Mexico. The first technology was a biorefinery (BRF)

Electrochemical incineration of wastes [PDF]

open access: yes
The disposal of domestic organic waste in its raw state is a matter of increasing public concern. Earlier, it was regarded as permissible to reject wastes into the apparently infinite sink of the sea but, during the last 20 years, it has become clear ...

Embedding Chemistry and Pharmacy Into Sustainability

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Chemistry and pharmacy provide products and processes that are indispensable for our high living standard. To understand their relationship with sustainability is important to allow them to contribute to sustainability in a sustainable manner. An integrated overview of green, circular, and sustainable chemistry and pharmacy is given and how they have t
