Sickle Cell Disease Is an Inherent Risk for Asthma in a Sibling Comparison Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Sickle cell disease (SCD) and asthma share a complex relationship. Although estimates vary, asthma prevalence in children with SCD is believed to be comparable to or higher than the general population. Determining whether SCD confers an increased risk for asthma remains challenging due to overlapping symptoms and the ...

Mineralogy of the inclusions and age of zircon from granite basement of Verkhnerechensk area (Yamal peninsula)

open access: yesЛитосфера, 2017
The study of minerals-prisoners in accessory zircons is gradually evolving into an important geological-petrological task. Such a study can show not only the earliest mineral rock association, but also evaluate the “sealed” mineral paragenesis of zircon,

Inclusive Teaching [PDF]

open access: yesCBE—Life Sciences Education, 2019
Over the past two decades, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty have been striving to make their teaching practices more inclusive and welcoming to the variety of students who enter college. However, many STEM faculty, even those at teaching-focused institutions, have been educated in a traditional environment that ...

Pazopanib Combined With Vincristine and Irinotecan in Relapsed Wilms Tumor: Encouraging Outcomes in a Heavily Pretreated Pediatric Cohort

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background While Wilms tumor (WT) typically has a favorable prognosis, relapsed cases—especially those with high‐risk histology—remain therapeutically challenging after intensive frontline therapy. The combination of vincristine and irinotecan has demonstrated activity in pediatric solid tumors, and pazopanib, a multi‐targeted tyrosine kinase ...

Multi-frequency topological derivative for approximate shape acquisition of curve-like thin electromagnetic inhomogeneities

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we investigate a non-iterative imaging algorithm based on the topological derivative in order to retrieve the shape of penetrable electromagnetic inclusions when their dielectric permittivity and/or magnetic permeability differ from those ...

Potential Early Risk Biomarkers for Reduced Forced Expiratory Volume in Children Post‐Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We sought to identify potential early risk biomarkers for lung disease in children post‐allogeneic HCT. Patients with pulmonary function tests 3 months post‐transplant and plasma samples between days 7 and 14 post‐HCT were included. Six of 27 subjects enrolled had reduced forced expiratory volume 1 (FEV1) z scores.

Effective medium approximation and the complex optical properties of the inhomogeneous superconductor K_{0.8}Fe_{2-y}Se_2

open access: yes, 2012
The in-plane optical properties of the inhomogeneous iron-chalcogenide superconductor K_{0.8}Fe_{2-y}Se_2 with a critical temperature Tc = 31 K have been modeled in the normal state using the Bruggeman effective medium approximation for metallic ...
