A Discontinuous Sturm-Liouville Operator With Indefinite Weight

open access: yesJournal of Mathematics Research, 2010
In this paper, we consider an indefinite Sturm-Liouville operator with eigenparameter-dependent boundary conditions andtransmission conditions. In an appropriate space K, we define a new self-adjoint operator A such that the eigenvalues ofA coincide with those of such a problem and obtain asymptotic approximation for its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.

Designing “Korean” Kimchi: Speculative Configuration of Distance and Commodity Value in the Chinese Kimchi Industry

open access: yesEconomic Anthropology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the Chinese kimchi industry, manufacturers employ product names, photographs, and logistical strategies to promote their kimchi's “Koreanness.” So, what makes their kimchi “Korean,” and how does its Koreanness formulate kimchi's commodity value?

A minimax formula for the principal eigenvalues of Dirichlet problems and its applications

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2007
A minimax formula for the principal eigenvalue of a nonselfadjoint Dirichlet problem was established in [8,18]. In this paper we generalize this formula to the case where an indefinite weight is present.

Scalable Purification of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Organ Cryopreservation and Transplantation

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Scalable purification of silica‐coated iron oxide nanoparticles (sIONP) enables organ‐scale nanowarming and cryopreservation. Tangential flow filtration (TFF) offers a rapid and scalable alternative to conventional ultracentrifugation, completing purification in 2.5 h.

On a class of fractional \(p(x,y)-\)Kirchhoff type problems with indefinite weight

open access: yesCubo
This paper is concerned with a class of fractional \(p(x,y)-\)Kirchhoff type problems with Dirichlet boundary data along with indefinite weight of the following form \begin{equation*} \left\lbrace\begin{array}{ll} M\left(\int_{Q}\frac{1}{p(x,y)}\frac{|

Principal eigenvalue for an elliptic problem with indefinite weight on cylindrical domains

open access: yesMathematical Biosciences and Engineering, 2008
This paper is concerned with an indefinite weight linear eigenvalueproblem in cylindrical domains. We investigate the minimization of the positiveprincipal eigenvalue under the constraint that the weight is bounded bya positive and a negative constant ...

Homicide, punishment and deterrence in Australia

open access: yesSouthern Economic Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Australian data encompassing 1910–2022, by year and state, were analyzed to estimate the effect of capital punishment on homicide rates. Our estimates showed that capital punishment had a negative and significant effect on homicides. In some specifications, the estimates implied that an execution was associated with 12.68 fewer homicides ...

Eigenvalues of the $p(x)-$biharmonic operator with indefinite weight] {Eigenvalues of the $p(x)-$biharmonic operator with indefinite weight under Neumann boundary conditions

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper we will study the existence of solutions for the nonhomogeneous elliptic equation with variable exponent $\Delta^2_{p(x)} u=\lambda V(x) |u|^{q(x)-2} u$, in a smooth bounded domain, under Neumann boundary conditions, where $\lambda$ is a ...

Living With Chronic Rhinosinusitis: Insights From an Arts‐Based Study

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) significantly reduces quality of life (QoL), but data regarding the extent of its impact is sparse. Questionnaire‐based assessments of QoL may neglect aspects of complex patient experiences. Recent studies on asthma patients and other chronic conditions have used self‐expression through artwork to better

On the existence of positive solutions for an ecological model with indefinite weight

open access: yesArab Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 2016
This study concerns the existence of positive solutions for the following nonlinear boundary value problem: {−Δu=am(x)u−bu2−cupup+1−Kin  Ω,u=0on  ∂Ω, where Δu=div(∇u) is the Laplacian of u, while a,b,c,p,K are positive constants with p≥2 and Ω is a ...
