The Indefinite "It"

"It" is probably the most overworked word in the J_ English language. In English, unlike most other languages in common use, the gender of a noun is rarely significant. The overwhelming majority of English nouns are considered neuter, and "it" serves as the appropriate pronoun, with a definite reference.
