Depth-sensing indentation measurements with Vickers and Berkovich indenters
Journal of Materials Research, 1998Depth-sensing indentation measurements are performed with two different Vickers indenters and one Berkovich indenter. The sample materials were mirror polished Ag, Al, Au, Ni, and Ti samples. From the load-indentation depth data, the conventional hardness plots as well as the first derivative are calculated.

Indentation load relaxation experiments with indentation depth in the submicron range
Journal of Materials Research, 1990Indentation load relaxation (ILR) experiments with indentation depths in the submicron range are described. Under appropriate conditions, the ILR data are found to yield flow curves of the same shape as those based on conventional load relaxation data.

The phenomena of pile-up and sink-in associated with nanoindentation have been found to have large effects on the measurements of the indentation modulus and hardness of copper. Pile-up (or sink-in) leads to contact areas that are greater than (or less than) the cross-sectional area of the indenter at a given depth.

Simplified Area Function for Sharp Indenter Tips in Depth-sensing Indentation

Measurement of residual stress by load and depth sensing indentation with spherical indenters
Journal of Materials Research, 2001A new experimental technique is presented for making measurements of biaxial residual stress using load and depth sensing indentation (nanoindentation). The technique is based on spherical indentation, which, in certain deformation regimes, can be much more sensitive to residual stress than indentation with sharp pyramidal indenters like the Berkovich.
