The Role of Indentation Depth on the Measured Hardness of Materials
MRS Proceedings, 1993ABSTRACTUltra micro-indentation tests on Ni and Cu samples showed increasing hardness with decreasing penetration depth over a range from 200 to 2000 nm. The results suggest increased strain hardening with decreased indentation depth. To establish that this is a real material effect, a series of tests were conducted on amorphous materials, for which ...

A correction to the nanoindentation technique for ultrashallow indenting depths
Journal of Materials Research, 2007A correction to the nanoindentation technique taking into account the elastic recovery at extremely shallow contact depths was proposed. Using a high-sensitivity nanoindentation system with a sharp indenting tip, the magnitude of the elastic recovery could be obtained directly from very low-force load–unload curves, which was then used to correct the ...

Study of analysis methods of depth-sensing indentation test data for spherical indenters
Journal of Materials Research, 2001The underlying theory behind the extraction of elastic modulus and hardness from the unloading load–displacement data obtained with a spherical indenter was explored in detail. A formal treatment of the effect of indenter elasticity was given, and the validity of the use of the reduced or combined modulus in analytical treatments was verified.
