On the application of the work-of-indentation approach to depth-sensing indentation experiments in coated systems

open access: yesSurface and Coatings Technology, 2001
Abstract The work-of-indentation approach is developed and applied for hardness calculations in soft or hard materials, and also for a range of coated systems. The method appears to be less sensitive than other definitions to the effects of pile-up observed in soft materials.

A New Elementary Method for Determining the Tip Radius and Young’s Modulus in AFM Spherical Indentations

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a powerful tool for characterizing biological materials at the nanoscale utilizing the AFM nanoindentation method. When testing biological materials, spherical indenters are typically employed to reduce the possibility of

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

LOCAL NANO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CROSS-LINKED POLYBUTYLENE

open access: yesActa Polytechnica CTU Proceedings, 2020
Cross-linking is a process in which polymer chains are associated through chemical bonds. The cross-linking level can be adjusted by the irradiation dosage and often by means of a cross-linking booster. The polymer additional cross-linking influences the

Numerical Study on the Rebound of Low-Velocity Impact-Induced Indentation in Composite Laminate

open access: yesAerospace, 2022
Indentation is an effective indication of LVI damage in PMCs. However, indentation can rebound partly with time. Thus, a good understanding of the rebound behavior of the impacted pit is helpful in damage assessment for composites.

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...
