Nanoindentation of polyurethane with phase-separated fibrillar structure

open access: yesPolymer Testing, 2021
: Polyurethane elastomer is investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in a regime of fast nanoindentation (simultaneous getting relief and mechanical properties of the surface).

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

Accurate Modelling of AFM Force-Indentation Curves with Blunted Indenters at Small Indentation Depths

open access: yesMicromachines
When testing biological samples with atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation using pyramidal indenters, Sneddon’s equation is commonly used for data processing, approximating the indenter as a perfect cone. While more accurate models treat the AFM tip as a blunted cone or pyramid, these are complex and lack a direct relationship between applied ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

General Relationship Between Contact Stiffness, Contact Depth, and Mechanical Properties for Indentation in Linear Viscoelastic Solids Using Axisymmetric Indenters of Arbitrary Profiles

open access: yes, 2005
We derive a relationship between the initial unloading slope, contact depth, and the instantaneous relaxation modulus for indentation in linear viscoelastic solids by a rigid indenter with an arbitrary axisymmetric smooth profile.

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

The Issues of the Radiation Hardening Determination of Steels After Ion Irradiation Using Instrumented Indentation

open access: yesMetals
The application of the instrumented indentation method with a Berkovich indenter (triangular pyramid) is considered for the determination of microhardness and radiation hardening of ion-irradiated steels.

Investigation of the mechanism of the indentation size effect for titanium

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2019
In this study, we investigated the mechanism of the indentation size effect for Ti, whose crystal structure is hexagonal close-packed. Indentation tests were performed for two types of single-crystal Ti with different crystal orientations: (0001) and ...

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...

MODERN CLASSIFICATION OF HARDNESS DETERMINATION METHODS [PDF]

open access: yesAvtomobilʹnyj Transport (Harʹkov), 2010
A new approach concerning the classification of materials hardness determination methods, based on the value of indentation depth exponent in the calculation formula is developed.
