Indentation size effect when measuring Vickers hardness

Bulletin of Kharkov National Automobile and Highway University, 2022
Problem. An important aspect in the study of hardness using the Vickers pyramid is to take into account the indentation size effect. When measuring the hardness by the Vickers method, the applied load is divided by the surface area of the impression. A significant factor influencing the conformity of the hardness measurement results is the indentation ...

Indentation size effect in spherical and pyramidal indentations

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2008
The indentation size effect (ISE) is studied for spherical and pyramidal indentations on a Ni poly-crystal. The indentation experiments were conducted using a Berkovich geometry as well as different spherical indenters with radii of 0.38, 3.8 and 51.0??m.

Indentation size effect in MgO

Scripta Materialia, 2004
Abstract The indentation size effect (ISE) model of Nix and Gao overestimates the hardness of MgO for small indentations. The cause may be associated with a slight expansion of the plastic zone. If the plastic zone has an effective radius fa, experimental data indicate that f increases for small indentations and is 1.66 at zero indentation depth.

Interpretations of Indentation Size Effects

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2002
For very shallow indentations in W, Al, Au, and Fe-3wt%Si single crystals, hardness decreased with increasing depth irrespective of increasing or decreasing strain gradients. As such, strain gradient theory appears insufficient to explain the indentation size effect (ISE) at depths less than several hundred nanometers. Present research links the ISE to

Indentation size effect in nanohardness

Acta Materialia, 2011
Abstract It was shown experimentally that changing the indenter load P and the indentation size does not change the total deformation during indentation ( e t  ≈ const.), and that fracture does not influence the scale effect. For this reason the physical nature of the scale effect is revealed better by nanoindentation and under more “clean ...
