Prevalence and Persistence of Antimicrobial Resistance in Broiler Indicator Bacteria
Microbial Drug Resistance, 2010This study explored the prevalence and persistence of acquired antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecium from healthy broilers. In 32 broiler farms, cloacal samples were taken during two production rounds, with one production round in between.

Bioluminescent Bacteria as Indicators of Chemical Contamination of Coastal Waters
Journal of Environmental Quality, 2005ABSTRACTThe ratio of bioluminescent to total bacteria (bioluminescent ratio, BLR) as an indicator of a variety of types of anthropogenic contamination of estuarine ecosystems was evaluated through a series of laboratory and field studies. Laboratory studies indicated that the BLR of natural bacterioplankton communities was proportionally reduced in the

Indicator bacteria and limnological parameters in fish ponds
Water Research, 1994Abstract The populations of indicator bacteria (mesophilic, coliform and fecal streptococci) together with relevant limnological parameters (temperature, oxygen, BOD and chlorophyll-α) were recorded during a 6 year study of three eutrophic ponds. Ecosystems were manipulated with fish (Cyprinus carpio) in 2-year management cycles: in spring of the ...

Campylobacters, Salmonellas, and Indicator Bacteria in the Lune Estuary
1996Estuaries are increasingly being used for recreational purposes. The Lune estuary at Lancaster, for example, is a centre for water skiing and jet skiing. Such sports can only be done at high-water, which unfortunately coincides with the discharge of sewage effluent into the estuary from Lancaster’s effluent treatment works (ETW).

Variations of Indicator Bacteria in a Large Urban Watershed
Transactions of the ASABE, 2011The contamination of water resources by nonpoint-source fecal pollution is a major concern to human health and water quality throughout the world. The Santa Ana River (SAR) in southern California is an impaired stream with historically high fecal coliform counts.

Coliphages and indicator bacteria in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts
Environmental Toxicology, 1999Surface water was tested for two bacterial and two coliphage indicators of fecal pollution at four sites in Boston Harbor, MA over 1 year. Of 108 samples tested, somatic coliphages, fecal coliforms, enterococci, and F-specific phages were present in 107, 105, 73, and 58 water samples, respectively.

Indicator Bacteria Removal by Bioretention in North Carolina
2010 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, June 20 - June 23, 2010, 2010Stormwater runoff is a transport mechanism for indicator bacteria to receiving waters, resulting in an increased risk to public health through consumption of contaminated shellfish or ingestion by swimmers. The resulting economic and public safety concerns are common throughout the United States, particularly in coastal areas.

Effect of high-power microwave on indicator bacteria for sterilization
IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1996According to the superiority sterilization, a specially-designed microwave disinfector using high-power microwave energy was made. A series of sterilizing experiments have been made to determine the effect of microwave energy on several typical indicator bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis var.

Animals and Humans as Sources of Fecal Indicator Bacteria
2014This chapter talks about the distribution of the major indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., and a variety of anaerobes (including Clostridium perfringens, Bifidobacteria spp., and members of the Bacteroidales) in humans, in domesticated animals and birds, and in undomesticated animal hosts.

Taxonomy, Phylogeny, and Physiology of Fecal Indicator Bacteria
2014In studies of environmental quality, there are several different groups of bacteria frequently used as fecal indicators. The most widely applied approach is to use the group represented by the family Enterobacteriaceae (coliforms and fecal coliforms).
