The Development of Indicator-Dilution Techniques

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1984
After 87 years, Stewart's fundamental conceptual contribution, the indicator-dilution method for measuring blood flow, is still the basis for a variety of common, practical, and minimally invasive clinical techniques. Given the spectrum of available indicators and their corresponding sensing techniques, we review the relevant transport theory and ...

A century of indicator dilution technique

Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging, 2013
SummaryThis review imparts the history and the present status of the indicator dilution technique with quantitative bolus injection. The first report on flow measurement with this technique appeared 100 years ago. In 1928, the use of intravascular dyes made possible a widespread application in animals and human during the next decades.

Indicator Recirculation as a Limiting Factor of Indicator Dilution Techniques

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1957
Short injections of Evans blue dye were made into the aortic root, pulmonary artery and femoral vein of dogs under normotensive and hypotensive conditions. The time intervals between the initial appearance of the indicator at the arterial sampling site and its first reappearance at the site (‘reappearance time’) were determined.

Pulmonary edema with smoke inhalation, undetected by indicator-dilution technique

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1987
Despite experimental evidence for an increase in extravascular lung water (EVLW) after inhalation injury, thermal-dye estimations of EVLW, extravascular thermal volume (EVTV), have repeatedly failed to demonstrate its presence in patients. This situation was evaluated in a sheep model.

INDICATOR DILUTION TECHNIQUES IN CARDIOVASCULAR QUANTIFICATION

2007
The injection of indicators in the blood stream is used for several diagnostic measure ments of the cardiovascular system functionality. An indicator is a non-toxic substance that can be detected by a specific sensor. The detection often implies a contact between indicator and sensor. As a result, the measurement is invasive, i.e.

Cardiac Output Monitoring Using Indicator-Dilution Techniques: Basics, Limits, and Perspectives

Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2010
The ability to monitor cardiac output is one of the important cornerstones of hemodynamic assessment for managing critically ill patients at increased risk for developing cardiac complications, and in particular in patients with preexisting cardiovascular comorbidities.
